On Sunday, large crowds gathered throughout Hong Kong, including thousands near the apartment complexes that were consumed by flames earlier this week, resulting in at least 146 fatalities in the city's deadliest fire in decades. Both the police and Hong Kong's anti-corruption authority have opened investigations into the Wang Fuk Court blaze. Meanwhile, a petition calling for increased accountability and an independent inquiry was quickly shut down, and its organizer was reportedly arrested for sedition.

The first Sunday after the catastrophic fire drew thousands to a small park adjacent to the scorched residential complex, which has become a central site for mourning. AFP reporters noted that the line of people, many clad in dark clothing and carrying flowers, stretched over 1.2 kilometres in the Tai Po district, with some mourners waiting for hours to pay their respects.

Authorities reported that the death toll had climbed to 146, up from 128 the previous day, as the Disaster Victim Identification Unit expanded its search within the building and recovered additional bodies. Chief Superintendent Tsang Shuk-yin of the police's casualty enquiry unit stated at a press briefing: "As of 4:00 pm (0800 GMT), the latest death toll stands at 146. We cannot rule out the possibility of further fatalities." The newly recovered bodies were discovered in apartments, stairwells, hallways, and on rooftops, with damaged interiors complicating recovery efforts.

Hong Kong authorities have formed an interdepartmental task force to determine the cause of the fire. The anti-corruption agency has arrested 11 individuals in connection with the incident, with three also detained by police on manslaughter charges. Media reports cited unnamed sources indicating that one person had been arrested for sedition in relation to the fire. Reports identified the individual as 24-year-old student Miles Kwan, who had been distributing flyers calling for governmental accountability and an independent investigation. Police stated that further actions would be taken in accordance with the law and declined additional comment. Beijing's national security office in Hong Kong expressed support for government actions against anti-China elements exploiting the tragedy to incite unrest.

Of the 146 recovered victims, 54 have yet to be identified, and authorities are attempting to locate approximately 40 missing persons. Fourteen injured survivors remain in critical condition, with another four in serious condition. The Housing Department inspected six of the estate's eight apartment blocks and found no immediate structural dangers.

Other parts of Hong Kong also hosted commemorative events, with many migrant domestic workers participating during their day off. Prayer gatherings in the central business district and Victoria Park drew over 100 attendees each. At least seven Indonesian nationals and one Filipino worker were confirmed among the victims, according to their consulates.

In response to the fire, the Buildings Department temporarily halted work on 30 private construction projects across the city. The Hong Kong Jockey Club announced that Sundays races would occur behind closed doors, and the HK$70.2 million ($9 million) in proceeds will be donated to a government-managed relief fund.

Reflection on Hong Kong's Tragic Fire and Its Aftermath

The aftermath of the devastating fire in Hong Kong has sparked deep sorrow and raised critical questions about accountability. As the death toll climbs to 146, with more bodies recovered daily, it is evident that this tragedy has become a focal point for public grief and anger. People have come together in mourning, lining up for hours near the Wang Fuk Court, where the fire ravaged the residential buildings. These gatherings are not only an expression of collective sorrow but also a sign of public outrage at the lack of immediate answers regarding the cause and responsibility for the fire.

Authorities have swiftly launched investigations, with both the police and Hong Kong's anti-corruption body involved in scrutinizing the incident. While arrests have been made, including the detention of a student for sedition after calling for accountability, the response has sparked controversy. The suppression of calls for an independent inquiry into the fire highlights a concerning tension between the public's demand for transparency and the government's actions. The swift closure of a petition for an inquiry suggests a reluctance to open the doors to full accountability.

The increasing number of fatalities, including migrant workers from Indonesia and the Philippines, emphasizes the disproportionate impact on vulnerable communities. It is a reminder of the inequalities that persist in Hong Kong, where migrant workers often face unsafe living and working conditions. This tragedy underscores the need for better protections and a thorough examination of how such an event could have been prevented.

While authorities continue their investigation, the impact on the community remains profound. It is clear that Hong Kong must confront the broader issues surrounding building safety, emergency response protocols, and government accountability. Only through a comprehensive and transparent investigation can the victims and their families begin to receive the justice they deserve.
