Rescue operations persisted on Friday morning as several high-rise residential towers in Hong Kong remained engulfed in flames three days after the initial outbreak, resulting in at least 94 fatalities. Reports indicate that around 80 others sustained injuries, including multiple firefighters, according to local media coverage.
The fire department announced it expects to finish search and rescue activities in the Tai Po District by mid-morning, aiming to access all apartments in the seven affected buildings of the Wang Fuk Court residential complex.
The fire started in a single building on Wednesday before spreading to neighboring towers, each exceeding 30 floors, marking it as one of the deadliest fires in Hong Kong in decades.
Investigation into the Fire
Bamboo scaffolding had been installed around the buildings for renovation work on the complex, which was constructed in the 1980s. Officials noted that some of the materials used during the renovations might not have complied with safety standards.
Authorities have detained three men associated with a construction company on suspicion of manslaughter. In response to safety concerns following the disaster, the Hong Kong government announced plans to transition from bamboo to steel scaffolding for future projects. The precise cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Analysis: Hong Kong High-Rise Fire Crisis
The scale and persistence of the fire at Wang Fuk Court highlight significant vulnerabilities in Hong Kong's building safety and emergency response systems. With at least 94 confirmed fatalities and dozens injured, this incident ranks among the deadliest in decades for the city.
Initial reports suggest that ongoing renovation work with bamboo scaffolding may have contributed to the rapid spread of the flames. Authorities have detained three men from the construction company involved, signaling a serious legal and regulatory response.
The Hong Kong government's decision to replace bamboo scaffolding with steel in future projects indicates a shift toward stricter safety standards. However, the full scope of systemic issues, including building age, fire prevention measures, and emergency preparedness, remains under review.
As rescue operations conclude in the Tai Po District, the focus will turn to a thorough investigation and accountability, as well as assessing long-term policy changes to prevent similar tragedies in high-density urban areas.
