Death toll rises to 56 in Sri Lanka landslides and floods, offices and schools closed

Sri Lanka has closed government offices and educational institutions as the death toll from recent floods and landslides climbs to 56, with over 600 homes reported damaged, according to local authorities.

The nation has been dealing with extreme weather since last week, which intensified on Thursday when heavy rainfall inundated homes, farmland, and roads, while triggering landslides nationwide.

On Thursday alone, more than 25 people lost their lives in landslides in the central highland tea-growing districts of Badulla and Nuwara Eliya, located approximately 300 km east of Colombo, the capital city.

The governments disaster management center, cited by The Associated Press, reported that 21 people remain missing and 14 were injured in these areas. Additional fatalities occurred in other regions due to similar incidents.

Disruption to Daily Life

As the weather worsened, authorities announced the closure of all government offices and schools on Friday. Heavy rainfall has caused rivers and reservoirs to overflow, leading to blocked roads.

Officials halted passenger train services and shut roads in several regions after landslides deposited rocks, mud, and fallen trees across roads and rail tracks, which were also submerged in floodwaters.

Local media captured an air force helicopter rescuing three individuals stranded on a roof amid the flooding, while navy and police personnel used boats to transport affected residents.

Video footage showed a vehicle swept away by floodwaters near the eastern town of Ampara, resulting in three fatalities.

Analysis: Sri Lanka's Struggle Amidst Deadly Floods and Landslides

The devastating impact of the ongoing floods and landslides in Sri Lanka continues to unfold as the death toll rises, with more than 56 confirmed dead. The government’s response to the worsening situation has been swift, closing all government offices and educational institutions to ensure the safety of citizens and to address the immediate crisis. However, this unprecedented weather event highlights the growing vulnerability of the island nation to extreme climatic events.

Heavy rainfall over the past week, culminating in Thursday’s downpour, has caused widespread destruction. In the tea-growing regions of Badulla and Nuwara Eliya, landslides have claimed the lives of at least 25 people, and several others remain missing. The authorities' disaster management efforts, including helicopter and boat rescues, demonstrate a strong response to a rapidly escalating disaster. However, with roads blocked, train services halted, and infrastructure severely damaged, recovery will be an immense challenge.

Beyond the immediate loss of life, the environmental and economic consequences of this disaster will likely have a long-lasting effect on Sri Lanka’s agriculture, infrastructure, and livelihoods. The overflow of rivers and reservoirs poses significant risks to local communities, particularly in rural areas. While the government has mobilized emergency response teams, the extent of the damage calls for a reevaluation of disaster preparedness and climate resilience strategies in the face of intensifying weather patterns.
