Defense Ministry announces Israel's NIS 112 b. defense budget for 2026

The Defense Ministry confirmed on Friday that Israel's defense expenditure for 2026 will be NIS 112 billion, marking an increase from the previously proposed NIS 90 billion.

Defense Minister Israel Katz and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich finalized the spending plan as the government began discussions on next years national budget, which must be ratified by March to avoid triggering new elections.

Cabinet ministers started a lengthy session on Thursday to review the budget, with a potential vote expected early Friday. If approved, the proposal will advance to the parliament for an initial reading.

Katz emphasized that the military will continue to prioritize the needs of its personnel and ease the responsibilities of reservists. "We will act decisively to strengthen the IDF, fully support our fighters, and reduce the burden on reservists to ensure Israel's security on all fronts," he stated.

The IDF has been active in Gaza, maintaining positions beyond the Yellow Line as part of ongoing security operations.

The Financial Impact of Recent Conflicts

Israels recent conflicts have been expensive. In 2024, the country spent NIS 100 billion in operations against Hamas and Hezbollah. Since then, ceasefire agreements have been reached with both groups.

According to Smotrich, the 2026 defense budget represents an increase of NIS 47 billion compared to 2023, before the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas War. "This budget not only strengthens our military but also supports Israels economic growth and provides relief to citizens," he said.
