The planned demolition of a long-abandoned hotel has been postponed due to flooding and repeated acts of vandalism, according to the local council. Efforts to tear down the former Golden Eagle Hotel in Thornaby began in August, with an original completion target set for spring because of high levels of asbestos within the structure.

Stockton Council reported that ongoing incidents, including theft, arson, vandalism, and flooding, have led to water leaks and the spread of asbestos throughout the building. As a result, the demolition is now expected to take 62 weeks instead of the initially planned 36, with an additional 600,000 required on top of the previous 1.52 million estimate. The project completion has been rescheduled for August.

Labour councillor Richard Eglington, cabinet member for regeneration and housing, has called the hotel an eyesore for many years and noted that it has been an obstacle to future investment in the area. A financial report scheduled for cabinet review next Thursday highlighted that criminal damage occurred between asbestos surveys and the start of demolition on the seven-storey Trenchard Avenue property.

The report indicated that despite the council securing the site and installing warning signs about asbestos, unauthorized access continued. Break-ins during demolition caused further water leaks, extensive damage, and additional asbestos contamination. Furniture and interior items are now all classified as hazardous waste.

Contractor MGL will need to perform more intensive work to safely remove asbestos, requiring the extra 600,000 to cover labor, equipment, materials, and other associated costs. This demolition is part of a broader 23.9 million town improvement fund managed by the Labour-led council. The additional funding is expected to be sourced from underspent budgets in cycleways and housing projects under the Thornaby Town Deal, pending cabinet approval next week.
