A Denver-based center dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ youth has announced an indefinite closure following a break-in that resulted in the theft of nearly $10,000. YouthSeen, a nonprofit organization providing mental health and wellness services to queer youth across 10 states, revealed that the Colorado office would be temporarily closed after the recent robbery.
The local branch's safe, containing close to $10,000, an iPad, and vehicle keys and registration, was stolen during the incident. Founder and executive director Tara Jae emphasized the strain on resources, particularly for LGBTQ+ youth of color. Our organization is small and our resources are limited both within the state and nationwide, Jae said. This situation has been a mix of sadness, frustration, and clarity about our current challenges.
Security footage captured a man removing the safe from the premises. Authorities have identified the suspect as 58-year-old Stephen Guerra, who was later located in a stolen Toyota RAV4 with two damaged, empty cash boxes. He is facing second-degree burglary charges.
While the center will no longer provide in-person services in Denver, YouthSeen plans to continue supporting youth through online programs. The organization does not currently plan to reopen the physical location or open a new office in the near future. Jae stressed the importance of safety for visitors, saying, Until we can guarantee a safe environment, we cannot welcome people in. Donations at this time are incredibly helpful.

Analysis: The Impact of the Break-In on YouthSeen's Mission and LGBTQ+ Youth Support
The recent break-in at YouthSeen, a nonprofit center supporting LGBTQ+ youth in Denver, has cast a shadow over the organization's ability to continue its critical work. The theft of nearly $10,000 and essential equipment, including a safe and iPad, has forced the center to close its doors indefinitely. This unfortunate incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by smaller organizations serving marginalized communities, particularly LGBTQ+ youth of color.
The decision to temporarily shut down the local office highlights the vulnerability of nonprofit organizations that are already operating with limited resources. As YouthSeen's founder, Tara Jae, pointed out, the organization is grappling with the dual pressure of insufficient funds and a heightened need for services. The emotional toll is palpable, as the center has been a vital support system for many queer youth across ten states, offering mental health and wellness resources. The break-in has not only caused financial strain but has also jeopardized the safety and well-being of those the center aims to protect.
While in-person services in Denver have been suspended, YouthSeen is maintaining its commitment to supporting LGBTQ+ youth through online programs. This pivot to virtual services ensures continuity, but it is not a replacement for the direct, face-to-face support that many young people rely on. The center’s ability to rebuild and eventually reopen will depend on both community support and their ability to ensure the safety of their staff, visitors, and resources. For now, the organization’s focus will remain on navigating the immediate aftermath of the robbery while continuing its mission through digital platforms.
As donations continue to be a vital source of financial relief, the incident also brings attention to the broader issue of how LGBTQ+ organizations are often underfunded and vulnerable to criminal activity. Until the center can guarantee a safe environment, it remains closed, reinforcing the necessity of community solidarity to ensure the survival and success of such essential services.
