Guernseys top political figure has publicly called for Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq to step down after he admitted to producing thousands of indecent images of children. Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez, President of the Policy and Resources Committee, described the situation as "highly unusual" and "deeply shocking."

"I was just as taken aback as everyone else," de Sausmarez said. "What matters now is how we respond. While we cannot control individual actions, we can influence the way we act in response."

Le Tocq, who previously served as Chief Minister, pleaded guilty in Guernseys Royal Court to 15 charges. These include creating over 2,400 indecent images of children, possessing extreme pornography, and sending inappropriate messages. Sentencing is scheduled for January.

Le Tocq was arrested in July and resigned from the islands top political committee in September, but he remains a member of the States and continues to draw his salary. De Sausmarez urged that he should resign immediately and return any earnings received since his arrest.

"I strongly encourage Jonathan to consider resigning, as this would be the most appropriate step," she said. If he declines, authorities could initiate a legal petition after sentencing to remove him, subject to the Bailiffs approval.

Le Tocq had finished ninth in June's general election with 8,002 votes. Although nominated to serve as the islands most senior politician, he was not elected to the role in July.

Earlier statements from de Sausmarez highlighted her "heartbreak and empathy for the victims" following Le Tocqs guilty plea. She extended her thoughts to all those affected, including families and church communities. The revelations of "these heinous crimes" have left many in Guernsey deeply shaken.

Support and advice for those affected can be found through local assistance services.

Author's Analysis: The Urgent Call for Accountability in Guernsey Politics

The recent admission by Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq to producing thousands of indecent images of children has prompted unprecedented calls for his resignation. As President of the Policy and Resources Committee, Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez described the situation as "highly unusual" and "deeply shocking," emphasizing the immediate need for responsible action from the island's political leadership.

Le Tocq, a former Chief Minister, pleaded guilty to 15 charges, including creating over 2,400 indecent images, possessing extreme pornography, and sending inappropriate messages. Sentencing is scheduled for January, yet he remains a member of the States and continues to draw his salary, raising significant concerns about governance and accountability.

De Sausmarez has urged Le Tocq to resign immediately and return any earnings received since his arrest. Should he refuse, legal mechanisms exist to remove him, pending approval from the Bailiff. This case underscores the tension between legal proceedings and ethical responsibility in public office.

For the residents of Guernsey, the revelations have caused deep distress, particularly among victims and community members. Local support services are available to those affected, highlighting the importance of care and recovery in the wake of such crimes.
