ECU Health is partnering with Artisight to bring Smart Hospital technology to hospitals throughout eastern North Carolina, starting with five facilities and expanding in the next year. This initiative aims to improve telehealth capabilities, allowing specialists from ECU Health Medical Center to provide more comprehensive care locally and enhance experiences for both patients and care teams.
The first rollout will take place at ECU Health Roanoke-Chowan, Bertie, Chowan, North, and Duplin Hospitals. The telehealth platform will support services including Tele ICU, Tele Observers, and Tele Neuro, with specific offerings varying by location.
Artisights Smart Hospital system combines cameras, microphones, AI, and other connected devices to give hospitals real-time monitoring capabilities. The platform integrates with electronic health records (EHRs) to optimize workflows and facilitate coordinated care. It also includes AI-driven functions designed to improve hospital operations and patient care, supporting virtual nursing and remote patient monitoring to allow staff to manage more patients efficiently.
Additionally, this technology enables patients in rural communities to receive specialized care from ECU Health Medical Center clinicians via two-way video and audio, minimizing the need for travel. This approach strengthens communication among care teams, reduces patient transfers, and speeds up treatment delivery.
Brian Floyd, Chief Operating Officer of ECU Health, stated: Serving a large portion of North Carolina, many of our patients reside in remote areas. This platform allows them to access high-quality specialty care close to home. By leveraging technology, we can extend our reach and enhance healthcare across eastern North Carolina.
In August 2025, ECU Health Behavioral Health Hospital inaugurated a new 144-bed facility to further expand healthcare services in the region.
