Germany has officially deployed the Arrow 3, Israels cutting-edge ballistic missile defense system, marking the first time the technology has been handed to a foreign military. The system has successfully intercepted hundreds of ballistic missiles launched by Iran and Houthi forces in recent years, proving its effectiveness in combat.
The introduction of Arrow 3 into Europe provides a significant boost to continental air defense amid increasing threats from Russia. NATO nations are enhancing their long-range missile defenses, and the Arrow 3 system adds a crucial layer capable of intercepting missiles outside Earths atmosphere, a capability that distinguishes it from many other defense systems.
Boaz Levy, CEO of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), described Arrow 3 as an ideal solution for Germany to protect both its own population and its European neighbors. According to Levy, the system has repeatedly demonstrated its reliability by intercepting numerous ballistic missiles in past conflicts, earning a reputation as a "combat-proven" shield.
Germany acquired Arrow 3 in a $3.5 billion deal signed in September 2023, Israel's largest-ever defense export. The first operational system has now been handed over, granting Germany full control of its missile defense capabilities.
The Arrow program, developed jointly by IAI and Boeing, includes Arrow 2, operational since 2000, and the more advanced Arrow 3, which became active in 2017. Both systems utilize two-stage solid-fuel interceptors to neutralize incoming ballistic missiles, with Arrow 3 capable of targeting threats in space. These systems have been central to Israel's air defense, particularly during multiple Iranian missile attacks totaling hundreds of projectiles.
Recent upgrades to the Arrow system have enhanced its interception rates, which Levy claims exceed 90%, even under the most intense missile barrages. IAI is currently working on Arrow 4, an upgraded interceptor that will eventually succeed Arrow 2.
Arrow 3 complements Germanys existing defense network, which includes the IRIS-T SLM and MIM-104 Patriot systems. Its deployment comes as European nations strengthen their defenses against Russia, which continues to launch ballistic and cruise missiles as well as drone attacks in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Other countries, such as Denmark, are also expanding their air defense capabilities with acquisitions like NASAMS and the SAMP/T system.
