Europol: Germany and Switzerland Close $1.4B Crypto Mixer in Joint Operation

Law enforcement agencies in Europe have dismantled Cryptomixer, a cryptocurrency mixing platform responsible for laundering more than $1.4 billion (1.3 billion) in Bitcoin since 2016. Authorities seized over $27 million (25 million) in BTC and collected 12 terabytes of data during a coordinated operation in Switzerland.

The takedown, carried out last week in Zurich, involved German and Swiss law enforcement with support from Europol and Eurojust. Three servers and the cryptomixer.io domain were confiscated.

Crypto mixers obscure the source of funds by redistributing incoming transactions and returning untraceable coins. After shutting down the service, officials placed a seizure notice on the website, which operated on both the clear web and dark web.

Authorities reported that Cryptomixer allowed ransomware groups, darknet forums, and black-market platforms to launder proceeds from illegal activities such as drug and weapons trafficking, ransomware attacks, and payment-card fraud by masking the blockchain trail.

Understanding Coin Mixers

Cybercrime consultant David Sehyeon Baek told Decrypt that the $1.4 billion volume indicates a large-scale laundering operation. He noted that mixers reach this size only when numerous ransomware groups, darknet markets, and fraud networks rely on them consistently. Operating for almost a decade, Cryptomixer demonstrated stable infrastructure, automation, and a strong underground reputation.

Baek explained that the takedown will disrupt cash-out processes for criminal networks, causing delays and frozen funds while they seek alternative methods. However, he added that capable groups typically migrate to other mixers, cross-chain bridges, or high-risk exchanges within a few weeks. "Short-term disruptions are real, but overall laundering activity shifts rather than disappears," he said.

Europol coordinated the operation through the Joint Cybercrime Action Taskforce (J-CAT) in The Hague, providing forensic support on-site and facilitating international information exchange. Europol had previously assisted in shutting down ChipMixer, then the largest mixer, in March 2023.

This action is part of a broader European crackdown on crypto-enabled crime. Earlier this month, police in Cyprus, Spain, and Germany, together with Eurojust, arrested nine individuals linked to a $689 million (600 million) crypto money laundering network. In a separate operation last month, Europol seized $330,000 in crypto and arrested seven people in a cybercrime-as-a-service network based in Latvia.

Burkhard Mhl of Europol, head of the European Financial and Economic Crime Centre, warned that criminal activity involving crypto and blockchain is becoming increasingly advanced. He highlighted that investigating such crimes places a significant burden on law enforcement across EU member states.
