Kate Middleton wears tiaras with the same ease she wears casual outfits, yet she chooses to showcase the royal jewels sparingly. As the Princess of Wales and future queen, she reserves these exquisite accessories for high-profile events, such as state visits, diplomatic receptions, and royal weddings. Since her 2011 wedding to Prince William, she has worn only five distinct tiaras from the royal collection, including a rare ruby-and-diamond circlet for a 2025 state dinner.
Wedding Day Elegance
Kate made her tiara debut on her wedding day, borrowing Queen Elizabeth's Cartier Halo Tiara for the ceremony at Westminster Abbey. It was a year and a half before she wore her second tiara, the Lotus Flower, at a Buckingham Palace diplomatic reception. The Egyptian-inspired piece, featuring pearls and diamonds, previously belonged to Princess Margaret and is noted for its lightweight, comfortable design reminiscent of the 1920s.
State Banquets and Diplomatic Events
Kate wore the Lotus Flower Tiara again in 2015 during a state banquet for Chinese President Xi Jinping, pairing it with a red Jenny Packham gown. Later that year, she selected Queen Mary's Lover's Knot Tiara for the Annual Diplomatic Reception, wearing an ice-blue Alexander McQueen gown. This tiara, beloved by Princess Diana, has appeared on Kate's head multiple times for diplomatic events and state banquets.
Over the years, the Lover's Knot Tiara became Kates signature choice, appearing at diplomatic receptions in 2016, 2017, and 2018. She continued to wear it for events including the U.S. State Banquet in 2019 and the South Africa state visit, often paired with heirloom jewelry from Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana.
Recent Tiara Highlights
In 2023, Kate attended the royal wedding of Crown Prince Hussein and Princess Rajwa of Jordan wearing the Lover's Knot Tiara for the evening banquet. She surprised observers during the South Korean state visit with the Strathmore Rose Tiara, a piece rarely seen publicly since the 1930s.
Kate revisited her favorite, the Lover's Knot Tiara, for the 2023 Diplomatic Reception at Buckingham Palace, pairing it with the same pink gown she wore to the Jordan wedding. She also wore it for state banquets at Windsor Castle, including for U.S. President Donald Trumps visit, styling it with a hand-embroidered gold evening coat over a silk crepe gown by Phillipa Lepley.
Her Most Grand Appearance Yet
For the German state visit, Kate debuted Queen Victorias Oriental Circlet Tiara, her fifth royal headpiece and the most prominent so far. Crafted in 1853 for Queen Victoria, it originally featured opals, later replaced with rubies by Queen Alexandra. Kates choice honored the German connection of Prince Albert, and it marked the first public appearance of this tiara since Queen Elizabeth wore it in 2005.
