Sometimes the tiniest discoveries bring the greatest happiness, as witnessed by a wildlife enthusiast exploring the forests of Poland. Tomasz Sczansny, a photographer and ornithologist, noticed an unusual call during a stroll in Upper Silesia. His trained ears recognized it as the territorial call of a male Eurasian scops owl, a bird rarely spotted in the country.
Curious, Sczansny returned with a colleague and found an even more heartwarming sight: the male owl had a mate. Using a thermal camera, they recorded intimate behaviors of the pair and soon uncovered a nest containing tiny, fluffy chicks. This event marked the first documented breeding of Eurasian scops owls in Poland in a hundred years.
"There is nothing more fulfilling than witnessing the wonders of nature up close," Sczansny shared in an interview with Vectra Publishing.
Despite weighing less than 5 ounces, the Eurasian scops owl is an effective predator, consuming insects and playing a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. Its range stretches widely, from Portugal to northern Mongolia. Fascinatingly, research in Turkey has shown that nesting females sometimes bring worm snakes into their nests, which helps protect chicks from ants, leading to higher survival rates.
This discovery highlights the importance of monitoring wildlife with cameras and other technologies. The return of a species to an area after such a long absence emphasizes the need for local conservation efforts. Studies indicate that habitat loss and agricultural development are the primary threats to the Eurasian scops owl.
