Family donates £4k to power charity Christmas lights

The Molyneux family, known for their extravagant Christmas light display, spends around 4,000 annually on electricity, but they say the expense is worth it to support a good cause. Since starting their festive tradition in 2011, they have raised approximately 40,000 for the children's ward at Wigan Infirmary.

This years display includes a 9ft Santa, a 6ft bear, and a massive Christmas tree, attracting about 150 visitors to their Shevington home on Monday, where 40,000 lights were illuminated.

Paul Molyneux, 53, explained that the cost of running the display each year is significant, but the joy it brings to the community makes it worthwhile. The display features life-sized nutcrackers, a Santa sleigh, and numerous lights, totaling 40,000 to 50,000 in setup costs over the years, excluding electricity.

"When the lights are on, it really consumes electricity roughly 4,000 per year. Ive spent about 3,000 on additional lights this year," Mr. Molyneux said. He added that seeing the delight of children, drivers, and passersby is deeply rewarding. "Its all about spreading a little happiness. If we can do that, then its worth it," he remarked.

The display has become a cherished tradition for Shevington residents, with families visiting every Christmas Eve. "Its incredible how many people see it as part of their holiday routine. On December 1st, when we switch on the lights, the road fills with visitors, and traffic comes to a standstill," he explained.

Paul and his wife Jill, 52, began this tradition 14 years ago to give back to the community. Their children have benefited personally from Wigan Infirmarys care. Alfie, now 16, received treatment for seizures from the age of two, while Theo, 15, was supported after an infection left him unable to walk at age eight.

Each year, donations from the display are used to buy items requested by the Rainbow Ward, ranging from DVD players and Xboxes to bottle warmers and beds for parents. The 2023 donation contributed to the creation of a sensory room for children experiencing anxiety and stress, enhancing the wards resources.

The Molyneux family continue to work closely with the hospital, turning their festive lights into a beacon of support and cheer for both children and the community.
