The children of Jimmy Lai, the jailed Hong Kong pro-democracy media tycoon, have expressed growing worry over his deteriorating health. Lai, approaching his 78th birthday next Monday, has been imprisoned since late 2020 amid Beijing's tightening control over the former British colony.
Lai, who suffers from diabetes, has reportedly been held in solitary confinement in a facility without air conditioning, where summer temperatures can soar to 44C (111F). According to his daughter Claire Lai, he has lost substantial weight and appears visibly weaker than before. "His nails turn nearly purple, gray, and greenish before falling off, and his teeth are decaying," she said during a visit to Washington, where the family is seeking international support for him.
The Hong Kong government dismissed reports of Lai's alleged mistreatment as misleading, stating that medical care provided to him is "adequate and comprehensive." Authorities accused media coverage of attempting to "smear" the government and misinform the public.
Claire Lai also claimed that guards have denied her father, a devout Catholic, the opportunity to receive communion, and that minor gestures are used to demoralize him. For instance, despite his fondness for curry sauce, she said it was deliberately withheld during meals. "These are extremely petty actions," she added.
Jimmy Lai, a successful entrepreneur, founded the pro-democracy tabloid Apple Daily. He is facing at least 15 years in prison on charges of colluding with foreign forces related to the 2019 Hong Kong protests against Beijing's increasing influence.
His son, Sebastien Lai, expressed hope that world leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, will continue pressing China on his fathers situation. "It would take just two hours to put my father on a plane and send him away," he said. "It would be both humane and right. Theyve already put him through unimaginable suffering."
Analysis: Jimmy Lai’s Health and Imprisonment
From my perspective, the situation surrounding Jimmy Lai underscores the human cost of Hong Kong’s tightened political environment. Approaching 78, Lai’s health is visibly deteriorating, with reports of severe weight loss, nail and dental issues, and denial of religious observances highlighting the harsh conditions of his confinement.
The family’s concerns, including withholding of personal preferences and potential neglect of medical needs, raise questions about the treatment of political prisoners under Hong Kong authorities. While the government claims medical care is "adequate and comprehensive," independent verification is limited, leaving significant gaps in public understanding.
International attention remains crucial. The appeals by Lai’s children to global leaders reflect both the urgency of his condition and the broader implications for press freedom and human rights in Hong Kong. The case serves as a tangible measure of how political imprisonment intersects with health, religious rights, and humanitarian standards.
