Nigel Farage, head of Reform UK, has expressed concern over his partys investigation into claims that a council leader posted racist content online, describing the situation as not looking good.
The scrutiny focuses on Ian Cooper, leader of Staffordshire County Council, following claims by activist group Hope Not Hate that they discovered racist posts on an X account believed to be associated with him.
During a Thursday press briefing, Farage revealed he was somewhat surprised to learn on Wednesday that an undisclosed social media account linked to Cooper had come to light.
Cooper has been contacted multiple times for comment but has not replied. He assumed the council leadership role in May, after Reform UK won 49 council seats.
Farage emphasized that the partys vetting process requires transparency about previous social media accounts. He said, Whether candidates or elected officials, its important to know their past issuespersonal or otherwiseand deal with them accordingly.
He added that upon discovering the account Wednesday afternoon, he decided to proceed with proper procedures, commenting, It doesnt look very good.
When asked if Cooper should face suspension, Farage maintained: We are following due process. We expect honesty from our members, and if they are truthful, we act honourably towards them.
BBC Verify examined the X account under the name Ian Cooper. While it lacks a profile photo or explicit reference to the council role, the accounts followers suggest a strong likelihood it belongs to the council leader.
Analysis: Reform UK Faces Scrutiny Over Council Leader's Social Media Posts
Nigel Farage’s recent statements highlight growing concerns within Reform UK regarding the alleged racist posts linked to Ian Cooper, leader of Staffordshire County Council. The situation underscores potential gaps in the party’s vetting process for candidates and elected officials.
Farage confirmed surprise at the discovery of an undisclosed account on X associated with Cooper and stressed the importance of transparency. The party has emphasized following proper procedures while awaiting further clarification from Cooper, who has not responded to multiple requests for comment.
The ongoing investigation by Reform UK, in response to claims from the activist group Hope Not Hate, illustrates the challenges political parties face in monitoring officials’ online histories. Farage indicated that any action, including potential suspension, will follow due process, reflecting the party’s stated commitment to honesty and accountability.
While BBC Verify cannot conclusively confirm the account belongs to Cooper, the account’s follower patterns make it highly probable. This case serves as a reminder that scrutiny of public officials’ past online activity is becoming increasingly critical for party credibility and public trust.
