A new hijab equipped with a magnetic "quick-release mechanism" has been introduced to support female Muslim police officers during patrols. The design allows the lower section to detach immediately if pulled during confrontations, reducing the risk of strangulation while preserving modesty.

The hijab was developed collaboratively by researchers at De Montfort University (DMU) and Leicestershire Police. Student officer PC Seher Nas expressed that wearing the hijab as part of her uniform makes her feel "proud and empowered as a Muslim woman."

Interest in the design has extended beyond police forces, with inquiries received from NHS trusts, paramedics, and private organizations.

Det Sgt Yassin Desai, founder of Leicestershire Police's Association of Muslim Police, said the project took three years of research and testing. Female officers trialed the hijab during development, confirming that the detachable section allows them to maintain dignity while staying safe. "After three years of development, the design works perfectly, and we are excited to implement it," he stated.

The new item, named the Blue Light Hijab, joins a growing trend of operational hijabs within law enforcement. North Yorkshire Police introduced a two-piece protective hijab in 2020, and a New Zealand Police design was trialed in Leicestershire in 2021.

PC Nas, 23, who recently joined Leicestershire Police, shared that wearing the hijab fulfills a "childhood dream" of becoming a police officer. She emphasized that the quick-release feature provides peace of mind compared to traditional hijabs, allowing her to feel secure while on duty.

Student officer PC Hafsah Abba-Gana added that the design ensures faith and professional responsibilities can coexist. PC Nas noted that putting on the hijab takes just five minutes, offering both convenience and safety.

Insp Marina Waka highlighted that the hijab is part of an officer's personal protective equipment, ensuring it is comfortable, secure, and professional in appearance. She expressed hope that it encourages more Muslim women to pursue careers in policing, knowing their religious needs are accommodated while maintaining safety.
