A resident of Florida is set to travel beyond Earths atmosphere as part of Blue Origins next crewed launch. The private space company founded by Jeff Bezos has confirmed the passenger list for its upcoming New Shepard mission, which will lift off from West Texas and carry its crew more than 60 miles above the planets surface.
This flight will mark the companys first human launch in over two months and the sixth crewed flight since the widely publicized April mission that included celebrated public figures on an all-female trip to the edge of space. It also follows closely after the recent uncrewed launch of Blue Origins massive New Glenn rocket from Florida.
Mission Details: New Shepard NS-37
The mission, designated NS-37, will be the 37th launch of the New Shepard vehicle and its 16th carrying people. Although no official launch date has been released, Blue Origin typically announces crew information only days before a scheduled liftoff.
All New Shepard missions launch from Blue Origins private facility in West Texas, known as Launch Site One, located near the U.S.Mexico border. The site is where the booster and capsule are integrated prior to flight.
Crew Members on Board
The six selected passengers will join dozens of previous participants who have flown aboard New Shepard on earlier missions. Among them is water is Joey Hyde, a physicist, investor, and former hedge fund executive who now lives in Florida with his wife and five children. His interest in space began in childhood after watching a Space Shuttle launch, a moment that inspired a lifelong fascination with space exploration.
The full crew for mission NS-37 includes:
- Michi Benthaus Aerospace engineer with the European Space Agency
- Joey Hyde Physicist and private investor
- Hans Koenigsmann Former aerospace engineer and longtime industry leader
- Neal Milch Business executive and nonprofit board chairman
- Adonis Pouroulis Entrepreneur and energy-sector investor
- Jason Stansell Texas-based explorer with a passion for rocketry
About Blue Origin and Jeff Bezos
Blue Origin was founded in 2000 by Jeff Bezos, who is also known for creating Amazon. While the companys core operations are based in Washington state, its testing and suborbital launches take place in Texas. Bezos also owns property in an exclusive Florida coastal community near Miami.
New Shepard is a reusable, fully autonomous suborbital rocket designed to carry up to six passengers on brief trips to the threshold of space. Bezos himself took part in the vehicles first crewed mission in July 2021, after nearly a decade of test flights.
New Glenn and Florida Launches
New Shepard should not be confused with the much larger New Glenn rocket. That vehicle is designed for orbital missions and has already launched multiple times from Floridas Space Coast. Standing over 300 feet tall, New Glenn is among the largest operational rockets in the world and reflects Blue Origins ambition to compete with other major spaceflight companies.
What Passengers Experience During the Flight
A typical New Shepard journey lasts around 11 minutes from launch to landing. The rocket accelerates to speeds exceeding 2,000 miles per hour before separating from the capsule. As the capsule continues upward, passengers experience several minutes of weightlessness while viewing Earth through large panoramic windows.
After reaching its peak altitude above the recognized boundary of space, the capsule begins its descent. Parachutes deploy to slow its fall, and it lands gently in the Texas desert. Meanwhile, the booster autonomously returns to the ground and performs a controlled vertical landing a short distance from the launch site.
This upcoming mission continues Blue Origins steady progress in commercial human spaceflight, offering civilians a rare opportunity to experience the edge of space and witness Earth from an entirely new perspective.
