Force to reduce PCSO night patrols in 2026.

Staffordshire Police has confirmed that Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) will have their evening patrols reduced starting next summer, despite concerns from local MPs about potential risks to community safety.

Under the new schedule, PCSOs will end night patrols at 9:00 PM instead of 10:00 PM, and half of the officers will conclude their shifts by 7:00 PM. The force stated that this adjustment comes after consultation with staff and the union Unison, aiming to increase PCSO presence during high-demand daytime hours.

Unison raised concerns that the changes could lead to reductions in pay, while Dr. Allison Gardner, Labour MP for Stoke-on-Trent South, warned that scaling back night patrols might reduce neighbourhood safety and public confidence.

Staffordshire Police emphasized that the total weekly working hours for PCSOs will remain unchanged. Additionally, PCSOs will receive training to take statements for certain crimes, such as shoplifting, to better support investigations.

The police force indicated that the revised shift pattern is part of efforts to save 9 million this year and an additional 11 million in 2026, while maintaining visibility and service levels for communities.

The new rota is designed to align with evolving local policing needs and crime patterns. The force also highlighted that over the past year, neighbourhood policing teams have been strengthened with 53 extra officers, keeping community safety as a core priority.

Meanwhile, in nearby Cheshire, authorities are considering plans that could lead to the reduction of 60 PCSOs.
