Former Police Chief 'Shocked' by Allegations of Misconduct

The ex-chief of Humberside Police has categorically rejected claims of serious misconduct, describing himself as "horrified" by the accusations.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) opened an inquiry into Paul Anderson shortly after his retirement from the force in June 2024. Addressing the allegations publicly for the first time, Anderson emphasized that he had "championed respect, honesty, courtesy, and integrity" over his 34-year policing career.

An IOPC representative stated, "As is standard with most of our investigations, we will release an anonymised summary once all related matters are concluded."

Anderson expressed his full backing for the IOPC investigation, highlighting that it was a "fundamental right" for him to receive a fair hearing. His remarks followed a letter from three unions urging the watchdog to conduct the investigation with "openness and transparency."

"Throughout this process, I have been subjected to malicious media leaks, spreading falsehoods and distorting events for personal or political purposes," Anderson said. He also voiced concerns about the impact of media coverage, noting the significant personal consequences he had experienced.

He added that he looked forward to reviewing the final report once it becomes public.

The IOPC informed the Humberside Police Superintendents' Association, Unison, and the Humberside Police Federation that the findings would be made available "in due course." In June, investigators submitted their draft report to the Office of the Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC), a year after the inquiry into Anderson's conduct began. Legally, the OPCC had 28 days to respond, though an extension was reportedly requested.

Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Leo Hammond, overseeing the misconduct case, stated, "We are waiting for the IOPC to provide final publication details regarding the investigation into former chief constable Paul Anderson. We will issue further comments once the outcome is officially released."
