LONDON Germanys president will visit Coventry Cathedral on Friday to lay a wreath, marking a symbolic gesture of reconciliation for the devastation caused during World War II, as Berlin and London work to strengthen their partnership in response to ongoing conflicts in Europe.

Frank-Walter Steinmeiers visit commemorates the night of November 14, 1940, when Nazi air raids destroyed Coventrys 14th-century Gothic cathedral, leaving it in ruins. The attack claimed at least 568 lives and severely damaged or destroyed more than half of the citys homes, representing one of the most concentrated bombings of any British city during the war.

The Duke of Kent will represent the United Kingdom at the ceremony. He has long promoted reconciliation between Britain and Germany, including his role as royal patron of the Dresden Trust, which fosters connections between citizens of Dresden and Britain after the Allied bombing that killed approximately 25,000 people and devastated Dresdens historic center in February 1945.

Steinmeiers visit concludes a three-day state trip to the UK, the first by a German head of state in 27 years. At a formal banquet held Wednesday at Windsor Castle, Steinmeier and King Charles III emphasized the historic and cultural ties between their nations and underscored the need for a united European stance against Russian aggression in Ukraine.

In his toast, Steinmeier referred to Coventry as a symbol of post-war reconciliation. Cities rose from the ruins. Former enemies became allies, he said. This shared history demonstrates what is achievable when nations commit to reconciliation.

The visit comes as European countries intensify their support for Ukraine and respond to Russian attempts to destabilize Western democracies through election interference, disinformation campaigns, and sabotage. Concerns over the reliability of U.S. leadership have prompted European nations to increase defense spending and enhance military collaboration. Earlier this year, Germany and the UK signed an agreement to expand cooperation in defense, migration, and climate change efforts.

Historian Martin Farr from Newcastle University noted that Steinmeiers visit reflects an unprecedented level of European unity since 1815, when the continents powers established the Concert of Europe to maintain peace after the Napoleonic Wars. War is a recurring theme in this visit, and its historical resonance is profound, Farr said.

The visit was marked by ceremonial grandeur, including a reception by King Charles, a horse-drawn carriage ride to Windsor Castle, and the playing of national anthems by a military band. Steinmeier and his wife, Elke Bdenbender, were escorted into St. Georges Hall, where a formal banquet was held amid lavish decorations, including a towering Christmas tree illuminated with thousands of lights.

Steinmeier also met with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, laid a wreath at Queen Elizabeth IIs tomb, and addressed Parliament, warning that Russias invasion of Ukraine threatens the rules-based order established in Europe after World War II. We are witnessing the revival of imperial ambitions and efforts to divide us, he said. This is why we must remain united and defend our shared values.
