The European Space Agency (ESA) has confirmed that the first astronaut from Europe to walk on the Moon will be German. This announcement was made by ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher during the agencys ministerial council in Bremen.
Under NASAs Artemis programme, humans are scheduled to return to the Moon by 2027. While the initial crew is expected to be North American, ESA has secured three slots for European astronauts, with a German selected for the first mission.
I have decided that the first Europeans to fly to the Moon will participate in the Artemis programme, Aschbacher said. We are currently identifying a German astronaut to join the team.
Potential candidates include experienced German astronauts Alexander Gerst and Matthias Maurer, both of whom have previously visited the International Space Station (ISS).
The Artemis programme began with an uncrewed mission in 2022. Next spring, Artemis II will send three Americans and one Canadian on a lunar orbit mission. The first crewed landing since 1972 is expected the following year, with subsequent Artemis missions supporting the lunar gateway, an orbital outpost designed to facilitate Moon surface operations.
Federal Minister for Research, Technology, and Space Dorothee Br expressed pride in the decision. The first European will be German, and this is an incredible moment for Europe. Whoever is chosen will be an outstanding astronaut, she said.
Artemis is a collaborative effort between NASA and ESA, with European astronauts scheduled to join Artemis IV and V missions. The ESA ministerial council, which meets every three to four years, approved a record 22.1 billion budget this year, marking a 32% increase from previous funding cycles.
This budget includes nearly 500 million for the European Resilience from Space initiative, aimed at strengthening Europes space security and advancing dual-use technologies. Aschbacher has previously warned that Europe is lagging behind in space defense, while other nations expand their investments.
In September, Germany raised concerns about Russian Luch-Olymp satellites tracking European spacecraft critical for Earth observation and communications. Experts suggest these satellites may be testing methods to jam, intercept, or manipulate signals.
Br emphasized the importance of investing in European space defense technology. Recent crises have shown the risks of relying on private tech billionaires. Sovereignty and resilience in space are essential for Europes security, she said.
ESA now has a clear mandate to use space for non-aggressive defense applications, marking a historic shift for the agency. Funding was also approved for missions to protect Earth from asteroids and space weather, including the Ramses mission targeting asteroid Apophis in 2029 and the Vigil space weather mission.
Analysis: Europe's Bold Step Towards Space Exploration
The European Space Agency's recent announcement that a German astronaut will be the first European to walk on the Moon marks a significant milestone in both European space exploration and international collaboration. The selection, made under NASA's Artemis program, highlights Europe's growing ambitions in space, especially in the context of deepening its partnership with NASA. The decision also underscores the rising prominence of European astronauts in key space missions, with a German slated for the first crewed lunar landing since 1972.
The involvement of ESA in NASA's Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the Moon by 2027, is a testament to the agency's strong push to strengthen Europe’s position in space exploration. As the first European in space history to walk on the Moon, the chosen astronaut will be part of a historic moment for Europe. ESA's selection process has naturally sparked widespread attention, with experienced astronauts like Alexander Gerst and Matthias Maurer emerging as potential candidates.
However, the significance of this achievement goes beyond individual astronauts. ESA's ministerial council approved a record €22.1 billion budget this year, underscoring Europe’s increased commitment to space exploration, security, and defense. This funding boost aligns with Europe's broader goals to enhance its autonomy in space operations, as highlighted by the recent concerns regarding Russia’s Luch-Olymp satellites, which could potentially interfere with critical European communications and observation technologies.
As Europe accelerates its space capabilities, it must focus not only on exploration but also on strengthening its security in space. The recent crises have proven that dependence on private entities or other nations for space technology poses a significant risk. With increasing global tensions, ensuring sovereignty and resilience in space has become a strategic priority for Europe, as noted by German Minister for Research Dorothee Bär.
In conclusion, ESA’s ambitious plans, coupled with its enhanced budget and strategic focus on security, position Europe as a rising player in the global space race. The upcoming Artemis missions, including the historic first crewed lunar landing, will serve as a platform to showcase Europe’s evolving capabilities and reinforce its commitment to space defense and exploration.
