Germany deploys fighter jets to Poland in response to Russian intrusions

Several German Eurofighter Typhoon jets departed from Nrvenich Airbase near Cologne on Thursday, heading to the Polish base in Malbork, located southeast of Gdask. The move is intended to strengthen NATO's eastern defenses.

The German Air Force described the relocation as a response to recent Russian violations of NATO airspace in the Baltic region, including attacks involving kamikaze drones. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius had announced the initiative in mid-October, and the operation is scheduled to continue through March.

"Through this deployment, our forces are providing a significant contribution to the protection of NATO's eastern front, complementing the rapid-reaction unit stationed in Romania since August," said Lieutenant General Holger Neumann, the commanding officer of the German Air Force. He added that the action demonstrates Germany's support for Poland and the NATO alliance.

Previously, German aircraft were positioned at Malbork in August and September. The jets are accompanied by roughly 150 personnel, including pilots, technicians, security staff, and military police.

The Luftwaffe is transferring Eurofighters from Tactical Air Wing 31 "Boelcke" to Poland's NATO border, reinforcing NATO's readiness and presence in the region.
