Graham applauds Trump administration's efforts to stop 'chaos in Venezuela'

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) voiced support Saturday for President Trumps growing pressure on Venezuela and the concentration of U.S. military forces near the country, as the president considers taking action "very soon."

I greatly admire President Trumps resolve in confronting the drug-run nations close to our borders with Venezuela being the most prominent, Graham wrote on X. For more than ten years, President Nicols Maduro has led a narcoterrorist regime harming the United States and has aligned with international terrorist groups such as Hezbollah.

Graham reinforced the administrations position by labeling Maduro an illegitimate ruler who maintains control through fear and oppression. Maduro has publicly rejected these allegations.

President Trumps decisive effort to end this crisis in Venezuela will protect countless American lives and offer Venezuelans a chance for a better future, Graham continued. I hear Turkey and Iran are quite pleasant this time of year

Earlier on Saturday, Trump announced that Venezuelas airspace was completely closed, following a warning from the Federal Aviation Administration for pilots to exercise caution due to deteriorating security conditions and increased military activity.

Under Operation Southern Spear, U.S. forces have significantly increased their presence in the region amidst rising tensions. Since September, the Department of Defense has targeted vessels accused of smuggling drugs to the U.S., resulting in over 80 fatalities. The CIA has reportedly been authorized to carry out covert missions in Venezuela.

In addition, U.S. Marine Corps units are conducting joint training exercises with Trinidad and Tobagos military leadership. Administration officials have identified Maduro as the head of the Cartel de los Soles, a suspected criminal network within Venezuelas armed forces. Earlier this month, the U.S. officially designated it a foreign terrorist organization.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the Cartel de los Soles and other Venezuelan cartels are responsible for terrorist acts across the hemisphere and for trafficking drugs into the U.S. and Europe.

On Thursday, Trump indicated he is nearing action against Venezuela while continuing his verbal conflict with Maduro, who has advocated for peace. Trump noted that strikes on alleged drug-smuggling vessels have made maritime routes less viable and said U.S. forces will soon target land routes as well. The land is easier, but this effort will begin shortly, he remarked. We warn them: Stop sending poison to our country.

Analysis: U.S. Military Presence Near Venezuela – Implications for Regional Stability

The recent remarks by Senator Lindsey Graham supporting President Trump’s escalating actions against Venezuela reflect growing bipartisan support for confronting the Maduro regime. As tensions mount in the region, it’s essential to assess the broader implications of these developments for U.S. foreign policy and regional stability. The concentration of U.S. military forces near Venezuela, under "Operation Southern Spear," has sparked debates about potential military intervention and its long-term consequences for both the U.S. and Latin America.

While the administration has labeled President Nicolás Maduro's government as a "narcoterrorist regime," the situation is far from straightforward. The U.S. has intensified its military presence in the region, increasing operations against drug smuggling, which it claims is directly linked to Maduro’s government and various criminal networks within Venezuela’s military. However, critics argue that such measures may escalate tensions without offering a clear path to resolution. Furthermore, the U.S. military's growing involvement in joint exercises with Trinidad and Tobago, along with covert CIA missions in Venezuela, signals an alarming shift towards direct action, which could destabilize an already volatile region.

Despite the administration’s justification based on security concerns, the broader international community remains divided on the issue. While some support U.S. actions in the context of fighting terrorism and drug trafficking, others fear this could further inflame tensions with nations like Iran and Turkey, as well as regional powers sympathetic to Maduro. Venezuela’s airspace closure and the U.S. military’s targeting of drug-smuggling vessels represent a sharp escalation, but it’s unclear whether these measures will lead to the desired outcomes or if they will provoke retaliatory actions from Venezuela or its allies.

In the coming weeks, the U.S. faces a critical decision point: whether to expand its military presence and direct action in Venezuela or pursue alternative diplomatic solutions. The administration’s "decisive efforts" to protect American lives and weaken the Maduro regime may resonate domestically, but the long-term costs of such intervention must be carefully weighed against the risks of further destabilization in Latin America.
