Hazing Allegations Against Southern University's Alpha Phi Alpha Chapter Dismissed

Southern University has finished its review of the Beta Sigma chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha and determined that there is no evidence to support hazing allegations. According to WAFB, the universitys Office of Student Leadership and Engagement sent a letter to the chapter president on Tuesday confirming that the chapter did not violate the Student Code of Conduct or Greek Life policies.

The chapter had been suspended in October, though the reasons for the suspension were initially unclear. A report by the Board of Regents had outlined concerning claims regarding hazing during the Miss Black & Gold Pageant. The allegations stated that participants were taken off-campus, required to wear all-black attire, perform physical exercises like jumping jacks, and recite a poem titled excuses. The report noted that these actions occurred without the chapter advisors knowledge or consent, prompting the suspension and investigation.

The situation drew national attention, especially in the wake of the expulsion of the Beta Sigma chapter of Omega Psi Phi following the tragic death of Caleb Wilson in February. Wilson died due to unauthorized hazing practices during the fraternitys membership intake process, after being physically assaulted, which led to a seizure. Arrests were made in connection to the incident, and the Wilson family has since filed a lawsuit against Southern University and Omega Psi Phi, while also advocating against hazing.
