Hislop undergoing treatment for advanced prostate cancer

Former Premier League goalkeeper Shaka Hislop has revealed that he is battling a severe form of prostate cancer and encouraged men of Caribbean descent to undergo regular testing. On Thursday, the former Newcastle and West Ham player posted a video on Instagram detailing his recent treatment journey.

"About 18 months ago, during my yearly check-up, I insisted on a PSA test as I always do. This time, however, my PSA levels were elevated," Hislop explained.

He continued, "Following an MRI and biopsy, it was confirmed that I had an aggressive type of prostate cancer. Exactly a year ago, on December 6, I underwent a radical prostatectomy and assumed that was the end of it. But six months later, my PSA levels began rising again, and further scans revealed the cancer had spread to my pelvic bone."

Hislop shared that he began medication shortly after and recently completed seven and a half weeks of radiation therapy. He posted footage of himself ringing a bell at Massachusetts General Hospital, symbolizing the conclusion of this treatment phase.

The Institute of Cancer Research reports that one in four men with Black African or Caribbean ancestry are diagnosed with prostate cancer, compared to one in eight men of white European ancestry. "I want to speak directly to my community: please get tested, know your PSA, and monitor its history," Hislop urged. Born in London, he represented Trinidad & Tobago in the 2006 World Cup.

"Prostate cancer can be survivable if detected early. Treatments exist, and testing can save lives. It saved mine," he added.
