Hong Kong was enveloped in deep sorrow on Saturday as thousands gathered to honor the 128 victims of one of the citys deadliest fires, marking the beginning of an official three-day mourning period. Citizens visited a small park near the charred remains of Wang Fuk Court, the residential complex that burned for over 40 hours, leaving white and yellow flowers and heartfelt handwritten notes.
The crowd continued to swell through the day, and by evening, mourners in dark attire filled the area. Among them was 69-year-old Wong, a longtime resident of the estate for more than 40 years, who sat quietly, counting the names of neighbors and friends lost in the tragedy. She recounted the loss of a grandmother and her 18-month-old child, highlighting the tight-knit bonds among elderly residents.
Even those unharmed physically felt the emotional weight. Wong Kuen-mui, a 67-year-old insurance worker, reflected on the loss of decades of memories. All the old photos of my children are gone, she said, noting the difficulty of recalling her childrens childhood appearances.
In Tai Po, a community center hall was transformed into one of 18 public condolence points across Hong Kong. There, people quietly signed condolence books, their silence punctuated only by occasional sobs. Ki, 52, expressed helplessness, hoping only that the deceased may rest in peace. Raymond Tang wished for the victims to cross the sea of suffering and reach the other side.
At 8:00 am, city leader John Lee and senior officials observed three minutes of silence outside the government headquarters, with both Hong Kong and Chinese flags at half-mast. During the mourning period, government-organized celebrations are canceled or postponed, and officials will limit non-essential public appearances.
Authorities in China launched a nationwide campaign to address major fire risks and hazards in high-rise buildings, according to CCTV. The Philippine Consulate General confirmed the death of an overseas Filipino worker in the fire. Police reported the death toll remained at 128, with 44 bodies still awaiting identification. Officers from the Disaster Victim Identification Unit, in full protective gear, completed searches in two of the eight towers without finding additional victims. Around 150 individuals remain missing, and authorities said reports vary in reliability. Families continue searching hospitals and identification centers, while over 40 survivors remain hospitalized, 19 in critical condition.
Hong Kongs anti-corruption agency initially arrested eight individuals linked to the blaze and detained three more on Saturday. The fire had rapidly engulfed seven of the eight high-rises in the Tai Po complex, with preliminary investigations pointing to highly flammable materials and bamboo scaffolding as factors in its spread. Fire services chief Andy Yeung confirmed alarm systems in all towers were malfunctioning and promised action against responsible contractors. Residents reported not hearing alarms, instead alerting neighbors door-to-door.
This disaster is the deadliest fire in Hong Kong since 1948, when an explosion followed by a fire claimed at least 135 lives. A multi-department task force led by the fire service has been established to investigate the cause. Meanwhile, the Buildings Department temporarily suspended work on 30 private construction projects across the city.
