BUDAPEST, Hungary Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbn has arrived in Moscow to hold discussions with President Vladimir Putin regarding energy issues, marking an uncommon visit by a European leader amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

This marks Orbns second visit to Russia since last year. He is widely regarded as Russias most sympathetic ally within the European Union.

Speaking to state media before his departure on Friday, Orbn emphasized that his meetings with Putin will center on Hungarys continued access to Russian oil and gas, despite U.S. sanctions targeting these imports.

Hungary remains one of the few EU countries that still imports substantial amounts of Russian fossil fuels, consistently resisting EU initiatives aimed at reducing member states dependence on Russian energy.

Analysis: Hungary's Continued Dependence on Russian Energy

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's recent visit to Moscow underscores Hungary's ongoing reliance on Russian energy supplies, despite the broader EU efforts to reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels. Orbán's meeting with President Vladimir Putin, centered on securing continued access to Russian oil and gas, highlights Hungary's strategic positioning within the EU's energy policy.

Hungary has consistently resisted EU-led initiatives to phase out Russian energy imports, making it an outlier in the bloc. While many EU countries have significantly reduced their reliance on Russian energy, Hungary remains one of the few to continue substantial imports. This stance has garnered Orbán both domestic support and criticism, particularly as the European Union moves towards greater energy independence in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The Hungarian government's position is clear: securing stable and affordable energy is a priority, even if it comes at the cost of diverging from EU consensus. Orbán’s alignment with Moscow, despite the political and economic fallout from the war in Ukraine, positions Hungary as an exception in the European energy landscape, maintaining ties with Russia when most others are distancing themselves.

This visit is a reminder of the complex interplay between national interests and broader geopolitical dynamics. As the EU continues to pursue energy diversification and sustainability, Hungary's resistance to fully severing energy ties with Russia is a significant point of contention within the union.
