Israel intensifies raids in northern West Bank, targeting Qalqilya

Israeli forces have intensified their operations across northern West Bank towns, with the latest focus on Qalqilya. At dawn on Thursday, the military entered the town from its eastern side, moving through multiple neighborhoods and creating a tight blockade around Kafr Saba, according to local reports.

The Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that several homes were raided, including those of families whose members had previously been detained or killed by Israeli forces. Among the targeted properties was the house of Muhammad Barahmeh, who was fatally shot by Israeli forces last year. One house was reportedly converted into a temporary interrogation site where several young men were held.

Reports indicate that at least two people were arrested in Qalqilya on Thursday, in addition to 11 others detained in simultaneous raids in Ramallah, Hebron, Jenin, and Nablus. The northern West Bank has seen a surge in violence over the past week following a new Israeli military campaign, which initially started in Tubas and Tammun in late November before spreading to Qabatiya and Masliya. The operations have included curfews, raids, mass arrests, and extensive damage to local infrastructure.

The Israeli army has stated that its primary aim in these operations is to apprehend Palestinian fighters. Raids in the West Bank have been ongoing almost daily since 2022 and have intensified since October 2023. These operations have severely disrupted daily life for Palestinians and displaced tens of thousands from their homes.

Impact on Jordan Valley and Settlement Expansion

Palestinian officials, including Tubas Governor Ahmed Asaad, argue that the recent escalation in northern West Bank towns is part of a strategy to reshape realities in the Jordan Valley, which borders Jordan. Israeli political figures continue to advocate for expanding settlements in this area, which tightens control over the territory and undermines the prospects of a Palestinian state.

Right-wing settler groups, supported by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have pushed for the annexation of parts of the West Bank. In June 2024, Netanyahu increased the authority of far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a resident of an illegal settlement, over the region. Following a United Nations endorsement of a two-state solution, Smotrich stated that Israel should apply sovereignty to the West Bank as a precaution against the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Casualties and Arrests

Human rights organizations and UN monitors report that Israeli military and settler attacks have risen sharply since the conflict in Gaza began. Military raids in Jenin, Nur Shams, and Tulkarem refugee camps in January, along with settler attacks, have resulted in over 1,000 Palestinian deaths and nearly 10,000 injuries in the West Bank. Over the same period, more than 18,000 Palestinians have been arrested, according to local rights groups.
