Israeli Defense Forces eliminate leader of key Hamas unit, along with more than 40 militants in Rafah tunnels.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported a significant strike in southern Gaza, targeting Hamas operatives hidden in underground tunnels beneath Rafah. The operation resulted in the deaths of more than 40 militants in a zone now secured by Israeli forces.

On Thursday, the IDF confirmed that a targeted Sunday strike had killed Muhammad Jawad Muhammad al-Bawab, the leader of Hamas Eastern Rafah Battalion, along with his deputy and close associates. Al-Bawab was implicated in orchestrating attacks against Israeli troops during the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, including participation in the October 7 Massacre.

Additional members of al-Bawab's inner circle were also neutralized during the strike. The IDF emphasized that the operation specifically targeted militants as they emerged from a terror tunnel in Rafah.

Israeli and U.S. sources indicated that around 200 Hamas fighters had been trapped in these tunnels for several months. While some militants surrendered or were killed in previous confrontations, the recent action resulted in a significant blow to Hamas underground network in the region.
