Israeli forces carried out a military operation in southern Syria on Friday, resulting in the deaths of 13 individuals. Israeli officials stated the mission targeted an Islamist group, marking the deadliest strike since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad nearly a year ago. Since the Islamist coalition seized power in December, Israel has launched numerous airstrikes and ground incursions into Syrian territory.
The Israeli military reported that during the attempt to detain militants in the village of Beit Jin, an exchange of fire occurred, leaving six Israeli soldiers injured, three of them critically. The Syrian foreign ministry condemned the attack, labeling it a "war crime" and accusing Israel of seeking to destabilize the region.
According to Toufic Hassaba, director of health for Damascus province, cited by state news agency SANA, the death toll rose to 13 later on Friday, after state media initially reported 10 fatalities. Among the dead were women and children, and some residents remained trapped under rubble. Dozens of families fled the village to reach safety. An AFP journalist observed several wounded being transported to a hospital in Damascus, about 40 kilometres (25 miles) from Beit Jin.
Wounded resident Iyad Daher described the attack: "We were asleep when gunfire woke us at three in the morning. Outside, we saw Israeli soldiers and tanks. Then the air force arrived, and shells began falling. I was hit by shrapnel in the neck."
The Israeli army confirmed the operation targeted members of Jamaa Islamiya, an Islamist group based in Lebanon. The military stated that "the suspects carried out terror operations in the Beit Jin area and launched attacks against Israeli civilians." Local authorities said the raid aimed to capture three men, sparking clashes with residents. "After the fighting, Israeli forces shelled the village using artillery and drones," stated village official Abdul Rahman al-Hamrawi.
Rami Abdul Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, called Friday's operation "the deadliest incursion since Israel began operations beyond the southern buffer zone." Israeli troops had entered the UN-monitored buffer zone separating Israel and Syria on the Golan Heights following Assad's fall. Israel has controlled the Golan Heights since 1967 and formally annexed it in 1981, a move not recognized internationally.
Last week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited troops stationed in the buffer zone, prompting criticism from Damascus and regional actors. Netanyahu has previously emphasized the need to demilitarize southern Syria after Assad's removal. On November 6, the UN Security Council reaffirmed its support for Syria's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity.
The United States, Israels main ally, has advocated for a security agreement between Syria and Israel as part of efforts to reinforce the Gaza ceasefire and promote wider Middle East peace. While talks between Syrian and Israeli officials continue, President Ahmed al-Sharaa has rejected Syria joining the Abraham Accords. Meeting with President Trump, al-Sharaa warned that Israel's repeated attacks threaten regional stability, but reaffirmed Syria's commitment to diplomacy. "In the face of this aggression, Syria is committed to dialogue," he stated.
Analysis: Escalation of Israeli Military Operations in Syria
The recent Israeli military operation in southern Syria has highlighted the ongoing tensions between Israel and regional actors following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime nearly a year ago. The deadly strike on the village of Beit Jin, which resulted in 13 deaths, marks the deadliest Israeli military incursion since the overthrow. This incident raises questions about the future trajectory of Israeli operations in Syria and their implications for regional stability.
Israel’s stated goal of targeting Jamaa Islamiya militants, a Lebanese Islamist group, comes amid an intensifying conflict involving Islamist groups operating across the region. The operation escalated quickly, resulting in an exchange of fire that injured six Israeli soldiers and significant civilian casualties. It underscores the increasing risks of Israeli operations spilling over beyond the traditionally held Golan Heights buffer zone, which has been a point of contention between Israel and Syria since the latter's territorial annexation of the region in 1981.
Despite Israeli officials defending the operation as necessary to prevent terror attacks against Israeli civilians, Syria's response has been firm, condemning the attack as a "war crime" and accusing Israel of destabilizing the region. The UN Security Council's reaffirmation of Syria’s sovereignty on November 6 further complicates this situation, as Israel continues its military actions, with little international recognition of its territorial claims in the Golan Heights. The growing humanitarian toll in areas like Beit Jin, with women and children among the victims, is also a critical factor in this ongoing conflict.
The operation’s impact extends beyond military objectives, as it is also influencing diplomatic efforts. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's recent visit to the buffer zone and the increasing calls for demilitarization signal Israel’s commitment to maintaining security in the region. However, Syria’s continued rejection of the Abraham Accords and its reaffirmation of diplomacy in the face of Israeli aggression suggest that a lasting peace in the region remains elusive, despite international pressures for dialogue.
