Israeli officials are examining an event in Jenin, located in the occupied West Bank, where two individuals were shot during what authorities described as a surrender process, according to a joint announcement by a military spokesperson and the Israel Police.

The Palestinian Authority confirmed the deaths, identifying the men as 26-year-old Al-Muntasir Mahmoud Qassem Abdullah and 37-year-old Youssef Ali Youssef Asasa through the West Banks General Authority for Civil Affairs. The Authority condemned the shooting as a severe breach of international law and humanitarian norms.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the men were wanted for alleged terror-related activities. The joint statement explained that the IDF, working with border police, aimed to arrest two individuals linked to a terrorist group operating in Jenin, accusing them of attacking security forces with explosive devices and gunfire.

The IDF said the surrender process spanned several hours, with the men eventually leaving the building after an engineering vehicle was deployed. According to the statement, gunfire was used after the men exited the building.

Social media videos of the incident showed two men leaving a building with their hands raised in apparent surrender, surrounded by Israeli soldiers. The footage later shows the men on the ground near the building entrance as multiple shots are fired, with at least one body visible afterward.

The IDF added, Field commanders are investigating the incident, which will then be reviewed by the appropriate authorities.

Earlier, the Israeli military launched a broad operation across the West Bank, searching over 220 locations, questioning dozens of individuals, and arresting several wanted suspects, according to previous IDF statements.

Following the incident, Israels far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir expressed support for the military and police, stating on social media that the forces acted as expected against the wanted suspects.

Analysis: Jenin Shooting Incident Under Review

From my perspective, the events in Jenin highlight ongoing tensions and the complexity of security operations in the West Bank. Israeli officials have stated that the shooting occurred during a "surrender process" after the two men allegedly engaged in attacks against security forces. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and border police are conducting investigations at the field and command levels.

The Palestinian Authority has condemned the deaths, identifying the men as Al-Muntasir Mahmoud Qassem Abdullah, 26, and Youssef Ali Youssef Asasa, 37. The Authority described the incident as a severe breach of international law and humanitarian norms, reflecting the starkly opposing narratives surrounding the operation.

Social media footage showing the men with raised hands before being shot has intensified scrutiny. While the IDF maintains that gunfire followed the exit from the building and the "surrender process" involved a prolonged standoff, public perception and international observers are likely to focus on whether protocols for handling surrender were properly followed.

This incident comes amid a broader West Bank operation, in which Israeli forces searched over 220 locations and arrested multiple suspects. Political responses, including support from far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, underline the domestic backing for the operation despite the international concerns raised.
