At dawn, Israeli forces launched another incursion into Syrian territory in the Damascus countryside, resulting in the deaths of at least nine Syrians, according to Syrian state media reports. Several Israeli soldiers were also reported injured during the clashes.
Syrian authorities stated that the early morning attack and airstrikes forced numerous families to flee the town of Beit Jinn to safer nearby locations. Israeli drones remain active in the area.
Local sources confirmed to Al Jazeera that Israeli artillery and missile strikes caused multiple casualties among Syrian residents, with others injured.
After the incursion, confrontations broke out between local residents and the Israeli forces. The Israeli military reported that six of its soldiers were wounded, three seriously, during the exchange of fire.
According to the Israeli news outlet Yedioth Ahronoth, the Israeli unit that entered Beit Jinn became surrounded, prompting airstrikes and artillery shelling to secure its withdrawal, resulting in multiple Syrian deaths and injuries.
The clash also involved Israeli military helicopters engaging in exchanges of fire after the forces entered the town.
Pattern of Israeli Operations in Syria
Israeli ground incursions, bombings, and abductions in Syria have been frequent, particularly in Quneitra province, the occupied Golan Heights, and the Damascus countryside. The militarys actions have intensified since Israel expanded its control in southern Syria following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.
Israel captured parts of the Syrian Golan Heights after the 1967 war and has maintained control ever since. After al-Assads removal, Israel breached a 1974 agreement, occupying additional border areas as a buffer zone, including the strategic summit of Jabal al-Sheikh.
Prior to the regime change, Israel already conducted airstrikes targeting Syrian positions allied with Iran. Following Assads fall, Israel increased its bombing campaigns, including strikes in Damascus, which resulted in Syrian military casualties and damage to the Ministry of Defence.
Earlier this month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Israeli troops in southern Syria, a move that angered Damascus and cast doubt on the possibility of a security agreement between the countries. Netanyahus visit, accompanied by senior officials, highlighted Israels continued hardline stance on Syria, despite U.S. diplomatic pressure.
Across Quneitra province, Israeli forces have established checkpoints, conducted patrols, and implemented gate controls. Civilians are frequently stopped, searched, and some detained. While Israel describes these as security operations, Syrian authorities and human rights organizations categorize them as abductions or unlawful arrests, with reports of around 40 people detained in recent weeks.
In addition to Israeli strikes and incursions, the Syrian government under President Ahmed al-Sharaa continues to manage ongoing sectarian tensions and the aftermath of 14 years of civil war, while striving to reintegrate Syria into the international community and secure vital economic support.
Analysis: The Escalating Israeli Military Actions in Syria
The recent Israeli military incursion into Syria's Damascus countryside, which resulted in multiple casualties and heightened tensions in the region, is not an isolated event but part of a broader and escalating pattern of Israeli operations in Syrian territory. These incursions, airstrikes, and artillery shelling campaigns have become more frequent since the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. Israel’s control over the Golan Heights and the subsequent military maneuvers in southern Syria have exacerbated the already volatile situation in the region.
Israeli actions, including airstrikes in Damascus and the surrounding areas, have targeted military positions linked to Iran, signaling a continued focus on Iranian influence in Syria. Israel’s increasing military presence in the region, marked by ground incursions and drone surveillance, has further disrupted civilian life. In the most recent clash in Beit Jinn, local civilians bore the brunt of the violence, with families fleeing their homes due to airstrikes and artillery bombardments. Such patterns indicate a deliberate strategy to secure Israel’s territorial interests in the Golan Heights while asserting dominance over strategic areas in southern Syria.
The situation also highlights the shifting geopolitical dynamics in Syria, particularly with Israel’s breach of the 1974 ceasefire agreement. By occupying additional Syrian territory and positioning military checkpoints in the Quneitra province, Israel has increasingly encroached on Syrian sovereignty. This provocation has led to confrontations with local residents and the Syrian military, raising concerns about the stability of the region and the potential for further escalation.
Furthermore, the increased military presence in Quneitra and the routine detentions and searches of civilians have drawn criticism from human rights organizations. Israel's justification of these operations as necessary security measures is contested by Syrian authorities and international observers, who argue they amount to unlawful abductions. These ongoing operations, combined with Israel’s strategic airstrikes, suggest a long-term Israeli agenda in Syria that may provoke continued unrest and regional instability.
In conclusion, the escalation of Israeli military activity in Syria not only exacerbates the humanitarian crisis but also risks further destabilizing the region. As the conflict continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether diplomatic efforts, such as those by the United States, can mitigate Israel’s hardline stance or if military confrontations will continue to dominate the landscape of Syrian-Israeli relations.
