JERUSALEM On Thursday, Israeli troops reportedly killed two Palestinian men in the occupied West Bank after the men had surrendered, sparking Palestinian claims that the killings were cold-blooded executions. The Israeli military confirmed that it is investigating the incident.

Videos broadcast by Arab TV channels show the men on the ground, complying with orders and raising their hands to indicate they were unarmed, before gunfire is heard and the men collapse. At least one soldier appears to fire a weapon directly at them.

The Israeli army stated the two men, from Jenin, were wanted for attacks on soldiers and had previously thrown explosives. The military said that after the men exited a building, fire was directed at them, and the event is under review and will be referred to appropriate authorities.

Palestinian officials and human rights groups expressed skepticism over the investigation, noting that prosecutions of Israeli soldiers are extremely rare. In Ramallah, the Palestinian prime minister's office condemned the killings as extrajudicial executions violating international law. The men were identified as Al-Muntasir Abdullah, 26, and Yousef Asasa, 37, whose bodies were reportedly taken by Israeli forces.

The shooting occurred as part of a larger military campaign in the northeastern West Bank. More than 100 people have been detained in Tubas since Tuesday, according to the Palestinian Prisoners Club. Israel says the operation targets attempts to establish militant strongholds and infrastructure.

Since the October 7, 2023, attacks that triggered the Gaza conflict, Israel has intensified operations across multiple fronts, including against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. The escalation coincides with a surge in settler violence in the West Bank, which Palestinians say often occurs near Israeli troops, while Israeli authorities characterize such attacks as isolated.

Airstrikes in Southern Lebanon

On the same day, Israel conducted airstrikes on suspected Hezbollah sites in southern Lebanon, targeting weapon storage and launch areas. United Nations reports indicate that at least 127 civilians, including children, have died in Israeli strikes in Lebanon since last years ceasefire.

The recent escalation included an attack in Beirut that killed Hezbollahs chief of staff. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam criticized Hezbollah for failing to control arms, protect citizens, or safeguard its own leadership. Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to visit Lebanon on Sunday, meeting with political and religious leaders amid the crisis.

Release of Palestinian-American Teen

Also on Thursday, a 16-year-old Palestinian-American, Mohammed Ibrahim, was released after nine months in Israeli detention. Visibly thin and wearing a grey jumpsuit, he was reunited with family and hospitalized due to poor health and a scabies infection. He had been arrested at his home in the West Bank for allegedly throwing stones at settlers and reportedly confessed only after threats during interrogation.

Analysis: Israeli Troops' Actions in the West Bank and Escalating Tensions

The recent deaths of two Palestinian men in the occupied West Bank have sparked widespread condemnation, with claims that the incident was a cold-blooded execution. While the Israeli military has confirmed an investigation into the shooting, the incident raises significant concerns regarding the treatment of Palestinians in the ongoing conflict. The video footage, showing the men surrendering and complying with orders before being shot, adds weight to the claims of extrajudicial killings. Palestinian officials, along with human rights groups, have expressed skepticism over the likelihood of meaningful accountability, pointing to the rare prosecutions of Israeli soldiers in similar situations.

The Israeli army's justification, stating that the men were involved in violent activities, including attacks on soldiers and the throwing of explosives, does not entirely address the questions surrounding the use of deadly force after the men had surrendered. The military's response, while calling for an internal review, contrasts with the concerns raised by international law advocates regarding the proportionality of the force used.

This incident is part of a larger military operation in the northeastern West Bank, where Israeli forces have detained over 100 individuals in recent days as part of efforts to target militant groups. However, the continuing violence, particularly settler attacks against Palestinians, has heightened tensions and undermined the prospects for de-escalation. The concurrent Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon and the growing instability in Gaza further exacerbate the volatile situation in the region.

While investigations are underway, the outcome remains uncertain, and the international community will be closely watching the process. The broader context of military operations and settler violence cannot be ignored, as these factors contribute to the escalating cycle of violence that has marked the region for decades.
