Israel's West Bank assault forces Palestinians into lockdown

Human rights organizations warn that entire Palestinian communities in the occupied West Bank are being confined to their homes as the Israeli military intensifies deadly operations across the region. Families in the northern West Bank have reportedly had to remain indoors due to the threat of violence, following an escalation of Israeli military actions earlier this week.

Save the Children highlighted that these lockdowns are preventing children from attending school, endangering family incomes, and increasing the risk of physical harm and detentions by Israeli forces. Troops have besieged large areas of the northeastern Tubas governorate since Wednesday, while conducting extensive raids in other towns and cities, including Jenin.

According to Palestinian news agency Wafa, dozens have been injured in Tubas, and over 160 Palestinians have been detained since the start of the raids. Israel claims these operations target armed Palestinian groups, but residents report indiscriminate attacks on civilians, obstruction of journalists and medical personnel, and destruction of infrastructure. Video footage from Jenin showing the killing of two unarmed Palestinian men attempting to surrender has drawn international condemnation.

The violence in the West Bank has intensified amid Israels ongoing military campaign in Gaza, which has resulted in nearly 70,000 deaths since October 2023. United Nations figures indicate that over 1,000 Palestinians in the West Bank have been killed by Israeli forces and settlers since the Gaza conflict began.

The northern West Bank has been especially affected, with around 32,000 residents from several refugee camps displaced since January and barred from returning. The Israeli military has conducted large-scale demolitions, actions described by rights groups and UN officials as forced displacement campaigns.

Ameer, representing a Save the Children partner organization, described the recent Tubas raids as a systematic assault by Israeli forces and a continuation of collective punishment policies. He emphasized that children in these areas are being cut off from essential services, including education and healthcare.

Meanwhile, Israeli operations in Gaza continue despite a US-mediated truce with Hamas that began last month. On Friday, attacks were reported near Khan Younis and Rafah, with a drone strike killing a Palestinian in Bani Suheila, east of Khan Younis. Since the ceasefire on October 10, at least 347 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, according to the local Ministry of Health.

Ismail al-Thawabta, director of Gazas Government Media Office, reported 535 violations by Israel since the truce began, stating that aid deliveries remain far below the agreed levels. Only 9,930 trucks of nearly 28,000 requested have entered Gaza, representing 35 percent of the total, turning humanitarian aid into a tool of political pressure. He warned that the humanitarian situation is deteriorating rapidly, with infrastructure and essential services severely damaged by ongoing attacks.

Analysis: Rising Tensions in the West Bank and Gaza

From my perspective, the recent developments in the northern West Bank represent a severe escalation in the ongoing conflict. Entire communities are effectively confined to their homes as Israeli forces conduct large-scale raids, creating conditions that rights groups describe as collective punishment.

The humanitarian impact is profound. Children are being denied access to education, families face economic hardship, and basic services are increasingly inaccessible. Reports from Tubas and Jenin indicate hundreds of detentions, injuries, and displacement, highlighting the scale of the disruption to civilian life.

These actions occur alongside continued Israeli operations in Gaza, despite a truce mediated by the United States. The slow pace of aid deliveries and ongoing attacks in Gaza underscore a broader pattern of escalating violence affecting both the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

It is clear that the situation is worsening, with civilian populations in both regions bearing the brunt. The combination of military operations, forced displacement, and restricted access to essential services signals an urgent need for international attention and humanitarian intervention.
