TOKYO Japans Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has captured public attention not just for her political agenda but for her dedication to her work and distinctive fashion sense. Her repeated pledge to work, work, work, work and work became the nations catchphrase of the year following her election as leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party in October.
While some were initially cautious about the message behind her relentless work ethic, Takaichi clarified that her statement was meant to express enthusiasm rather than advocate excessive working hours. I have no intention of encouraging overwork or presenting long hours as a virtue, she said after receiving recognition from a private committee.
Since becoming Japans first female prime minister, Takaichi has also turned heads with her fashion choices. Many young women, calling themselves Sana-katsu, admire her style and try to emulate it. Yet, the reception of her firm conservative policies remains uncertain. Her political focus includes regaining right-wing supporters after her predecessor Shigeru Ishibas moderate approach led to election setbacks.
During her party address in early October, Takaichi emphasized rebuilding the struggling party, urging lawmakers to work like a horse, before famously stating her intention to abandon the concept of work-life balance in favor of dedicated effort. Her repeated, determined declaration left a lasting impression.
Reports of her long working hours and limited sleep have raised concerns among colleagues. Takaichi has mentioned sleeping only two to four hours per night while also caring for her recovering husband. To unwind, she enjoys soaking in a hot tub both morning and evening.
Takaichis fashion influence has grown, highlighted by the so-called Sanae Bag, a Grace Delight Tote made by Tokyos Hamano Inc., priced at 136,400 yen ($875). The bag quickly sold out after she was seen carrying it, sparking social media buzz. Another popular item is her sparkling pink Jetstream 4&1 pen by Mitsubishi Pencil Co., which fans often purchase to emulate her.
Experts note that Takaichis combination of style and work ethic has elevated her to a new type of role model for women in Japan, breaking away from traditional expectations of femininity. Psychology professor Namiko Kubo-Kawai observes that, as a high-powered female politician with a practical style, she offers a fresh example for women who might not have previously looked to prime ministers as role models.
Although she maintains conservative stances, including support for male-only succession in the monarchy and opposition to separate surnames for married couples, Takaichis presence as the first female prime minister is reshaping perceptions of female leadership and role models in Japan.
Analysis: Sanae Takaichi's Impact on Japanese Politics and Culture
Sanae Takaichi, Japan's first female Prime Minister, has quickly become a prominent figure in both politics and popular culture. While her dedication to work and distinctive fashion sense have captivated many, her political influence is still evolving. Takaichi’s public persona is a mix of intense work ethic and carefully curated style, making her a unique role model for a new generation of women in Japan. Her slogan "work, work, work, work and work" resonated with the public, symbolizing her commitment to revitalizing the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). However, it’s important to clarify that her message is not about glorifying overwork, but rather showcasing her enthusiasm for public service.
Her personal style has also made a significant impact, with the "Sanae Bag" and Jetstream pen gaining popularity, especially among young women. This fusion of politics and fashion positions Takaichi as not just a political leader, but a cultural icon, breaking away from traditional expectations of femininity in Japanese leadership. The fact that she balances high political responsibility with a practical, yet fashionable, approach to her image challenges the stereotypical portrayal of female politicians in the country.
However, while her influence grows, Takaichi's political stance remains a subject of debate. She is seen as a conservative leader, with policies focusing on reinforcing traditional family roles and male-only succession in the monarchy. These positions might alienate some progressive voters but also appeal to right-wing supporters who feel the party needs to return to its conservative roots.
Despite concerns about her long working hours and health, her ability to remain an influential figure in both political and cultural spheres highlights the changing landscape of female leadership in Japan. Her position not only challenges the norms of female political participation but also showcases how leadership can be both strong and stylish, offering a fresh example for women across the nation.
