Katz criticizes IDF chief Zamir: IDF investigations and promotions should adhere to established procedures

In his Saturday statement, Katz accused Zamir of taking disciplinary actions against officers without prior consultation, neglecting to examine certain issues brought to his attention, and discussing the placement of more than twenty colonels before the Defense Establishment Comptroller completed his review.

Katz stressed that post-October 7 investigations and high-ranking appointments are critical and should not be influenced by personal or political considerations. He recalled that even under the previous chief of staff, he insisted investigations be finalized before promoting new major-generals. Katz had supported Zamirs formation of a committee, led by Maj.-Gen. (res.) Sami Turgeman, to review outstanding cases. This committee ultimately recommended redoing flawed investigations and completing missing ones, including the overlooked "Jericho Wall" Hamas plan, initially discovered in 2018.

Katz expressed disappointment that Zamir disregarded these recommendations and instead imposed sanctions on officers without informing him. The criticism came shortly after Katz blocked the promotion of Col. (res.) German Gitelman, citing alleged involvement with the Brothers in Arms movement and promotion of conscientious objection, and informed Zamir of this decision. Katz declared, "Those who encourage refusal will not serve in the IDF or be promoted."

Gitelman responded, calling Katzs decision political rather than professional. He clarified in a statement to his military colleagues in the IDF's 162 Division that he was part of a separate movement, "Reservists for the Defense of Israel and Democracy," and denied promoting conscientious objection. Gitelman announced he would withdraw from consideration for the contested position but confirmed he would continue serving as company commander in the 162nd Division.

Reports also indicated that Katz previously blocked Zamirs nominations for Brig.-Gen. Omer Tishler as Air Force commander, Tal Politis as defense attach in Washington, and V.-Adm. David Saar Salama as Navy commander, citing procedural concerns.
