HONG KONG Firefighters in Hong Kong have discovered dozens more victims in the aftermath of a devastating fire that swept through a major high-rise apartment complex, bringing the confirmed death count to at least 128. The blaze consumed seven of the complex's eight buildings, marking one of the deadliest fires in the city's history.
Deputy Director of Hong Kong Fire Services, Derek Armstrong Chan, explained that rescue teams focused on apartments from which over two dozen emergency calls were received but could not be reached during the fire. Following the latest recovery operation, 34 additional bodies were recovered from the charred buildings.
Security Secretary Chris Tang stated at the scene that the search for survivors and victims is ongoing, and officials warn that the death toll may continue to rise as efforts proceed.
