Following the detention of three suspected members of the Basea banned international neo-Nazi terrorist organizationby Spanish police and Europol in Castelln, the group's American leader, currently residing in Russia, responded defiantly and indicated further activity.
In a message to the Guardian, Rinaldo Nazzaro described the arrests as yet another instance of "political persecution" by global authorities, stating that such actions only "strengthen our resolve to resist their hegemonic control by any means necessary."
The Bases activities in Spain highlight the exportation of its brand of extremist ideology, which glorifies extreme violence and emulates armed insurgency tactics. Nazzaro and his group are also suspected of maintaining connections with Russian intelligence agencies, potentially assisting wider sabotage operations.
Experts were alarmed by the cell's level of organization and access to weapons. Joshua Fisher-Birch, a terrorism analyst at the Counter Extremism Project, noted the Spanish cells unusual public Telegram channel where members shared weapons training content and encouraged militant involvement.
Recently, the Base has drawn international attention for claiming responsibility for the assassination of a Ukrainian officer in Kyiv and other terrorist acts within Ukraine. A Swedish member was imprisoned in Luxembourg last week for planning a mass casualty attack during a previous Eurovision contest.
The Spanish faction reportedly celebrated the groups operations in Ukraine and promoted the creation of a white ethnostate in the Zakarpattia region. Online posts from the cell called for "calculated ruthlessness" toward perceived enemies and advocated establishing isolated, self-sufficient white communities in mountainous areas.
A review of the Bases Spanish Telegram activity revealed propaganda featuring firearms, training sessions, and idolization of figures like Ted Kaczynski. Posts emphasized combat readiness, survivalism, and the benefits of drone warfare. Images frequently showed masked individuals carrying the groups black flag and performing paramilitary drills in forests and rural areas.
Europols report on the arrests displayed a weapons cache including firearms, a machine pistol, combat knives, ammunition, neo-Nazi items, and cash. The agency confirmed that the cells leader maintained direct contact with Nazzaro, raising concerns about potential coordination of operations in Europe.
Currently living in St. Petersburg with his family, Nazzaro has long been suspected of ties to Russian intelligence, especially after the group offered rewards for assassinating Ukrainian officials. Despite these allegations, he denies any involvement with Russian security services.
The Base continues to expand its presence in Europe, with Russian operatives reportedly recruiting either unaware individuals in criminal networks or far-right activists for sabotage activities. Spanish authorities and Europol have not confirmed any direct Russian links in this case.
In the United States, the Base remains active despite intense FBI investigations in the past, which led to numerous arrests including members plotting a 2020 mass shooting and bombing in Virginia. Analysts note that the Spanish cells activities closely resemble patterns observed in the U.S., where members combine ideological beliefs with paramilitary-style training and tactical exercises.
Experts stress the importance of vigilance against the Bases ideology and its online ecosystem, which continues to inspire and coordinate extremist actions internationally.
