Macron urges China to support peace efforts in Ukraine during Beijing visit

During his visit to Beijing on Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed hope that China would actively contribute to efforts aimed at stopping Russian assaults on vital Ukrainian infrastructure. Speaking at a press briefing alongside President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People, Macron emphasized that, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, both nations carry a unique responsibility in promoting global stability.

President Xi reaffirmed Chinas commitment to peace, stating that the country aims for a lasting resolution through dialogue and seeks to maintain a constructive role in the process, while rejecting any notion of shifting blame onto others.

China remains Russias key ally amid Western nations distancing themselves from Moscow following the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Despite international criticism, Beijing has not condemned the conflict and has faced allegations of supporting Russias defense sector by providing goods that can serve both civilian and military purposes.

Prior to his trip to China, Macron met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris to discuss US-led diplomatic efforts to end the war. This visit marked Macrons fourth official trip to China. Accompanied by his wife Brigitte Macron, he was formally received by Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan at the Great Hall of the People.
