Man aims to resume jogging after undergoing double leg amputation

A man who chose to have both legs amputated due to a rare genetic disorder has expressed his ambition to jog once more. Tom Staniford suffers from MDP syndrome, a condition that left him without protective fat on the soles of his feet.

Earlier this year, Staniford had his right leg amputated, followed by the removal of his left leg in October, as a solution to the intense pain caused by the deterioration of his foot bones.

Prior to his first surgery, he completed a charity cycling challenge in Devon. He has said the operations exceeded his expectations, and he now hopes to master standing, walking, cycling, and eventually jogging with prosthetic limbs.

"My syndrome left me without subcutaneous fat on my feet and caused severe tightening of ligaments, tendons, and connective tissue," Staniford explained. "Over time, this distorted my bones and fused them together, making walking extremely difficult."

He added that the likelihood of a serious infection was high, which could have eventually forced amputation to save his life. "I decided to have the surgeries while I was still relatively young and healthy so I could recover faster and adapt more easily to prosthetics," he said.

Staniford described the decision to undergo amputation as straightforward, hoping it would significantly improve his quality of life. Recovery from the right leg amputation took him around two to three months, after which he was fitted with a prosthetic limb designed to support activities like walking and cycling.

He remains optimistic about regaining mobility and engaging in physical activities again, looking forward to the potential of jogging with his prosthetic legs.
