A man has been sentenced to prison after a high-speed hit-and-run incident that resulted in a death, following a failed drug transaction. Aden Wright, 27, was driving a VW Golf when he struck 29-year-old Ryan Griffiths on Burleigh Road in Wolverhampton on the evening of 21 August 2024.
Wright, who resides on Griffiths Drive in Wolverhampton, fled the scene after the collision. Griffiths succumbed to his injuries two days later. Initially charged with murder, Wrights charge was later reduced to causing death by dangerous driving by the Crown Prosecution Service.
At Birmingham Crown Court, a jury found Wright guilty, and he was sentenced to 14 years in prison and banned from driving for the same period.
West Midlands Police carried out a forensic examination of the vehicle and launched a manhunt, arresting Wright within a week. Investigators discovered he had been involved in purchasing drugs, which explained his presence at the location that night. Wright had attempted to use accomplices to complete the drug transaction with counterfeit money. When the deception was discovered, he sped away, colliding with Griffiths and briefly stopping to pick up a passenger before leaving the victim on the road.
Police revealed that Wright then attempted to cover his tracks by enlisting others to remove the vehicle, transferring its ownership, and attempting to implicate a family member as the driver. Despite his attempts to mislead investigators, evidence confirmed Wright was driving at the time of the accident.
Detective Sergeant Jeanette Roberts stated: "Wrights deliberate actions and failure to take responsibility caused immense suffering for Ryans family. Our investigation ensured he was held accountable and will serve a substantial prison sentence."
Griffiths family described him as "a loving and devoted son, brother, uncle, grandson, nephew, and cousin" with "a heart of gold" and expressed their devastation over his loss.
Author's Analysis
The sentencing of Aden Wright highlights the severe consequences of reckless and criminal behavior on public safety. The tragic death of Ryan Griffiths underscores the risks posed by high-speed driving combined with attempts to evade law enforcement following illegal activities.
The investigation by West Midlands Police demonstrates a thorough forensic and procedural approach. Despite Wright’s attempts to mislead authorities by transferring the vehicle and implicating another person, the evidence clearly confirmed his responsibility for the fatal collision.
This case also illustrates the intersection of criminal activity and public endangerment. Wright’s involvement in a failed drug transaction directly led to the chain of events resulting in Griffiths’ death. The 14-year prison sentence, paired with a driving ban of the same duration, reflects the judiciary’s assessment of the gravity of his actions and their impact on the victim’s family and the wider community.
Ultimately, the outcome serves as a clear message that attempts to evade responsibility, manipulate evidence, or involve others in covering up crimes will not prevent accountability in the eyes of the law.
