Former astronaut and current Senator Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) expressed excitement over NASAs recent announcement that scientists have detected sugars essential for life in samples taken from a near-Earth asteroid. Kelly described the finding as pretty exciting, emphasizing its significance for understanding the origins of life.
The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft collected samples from the asteroid Bennu, revealing the presence of glucose and ribose. While this discovery does not confirm the existence of life, NASA explained that it demonstrates how key components for biological molecules are widespread throughout the solar system.
NASA highlighted that ribose, along with deoxyribosewhich was not found in the samplesare critical building blocks for DNA and RNA. Yoshihiro Furukawa, a professor at Japans Tohoku University and lead researcher of the study, noted that finding ribose indicates that all elements needed to form RNA exist on Bennu.
Kelly, in a video shared on social media, stated that these findings raise larger questions about life in the universe and emphasize the value of federal investment in scientific research. He suggested that while life beyond Earth is not confirmed, statistical probabilities make it plausible.
Danny Glavin, an astrobiologist at NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center and OSIRIS-REx co-investigator, commented that the discovery increases optimism about the potential for extraterrestrial life. He explained that these building blocks are found throughout the solar system, from its outer reaches to the inner planets, suggesting they could have supported life not only on Earth but possibly on Mars, Europa, or other locations.
