The education minister expressed understanding toward a mother battling terminal cancer who was denied her preferred school for her four-year-old daughter.

Christine Lote, from Stoke Gifford, was informed by South Gloucestershire Council that a family member's health condition is not considered when allocating school places. She is now advocating for a change in this policy.

Having undergone a leg amputation as part of her cancer treatment, Mrs. Lote wanted her daughter Sophie to attend the closest infant school to their home.

After meeting with schools minister Georgia Gould, Mrs. Lote said the minister "promised" to bring their story forward. "It felt like a valuable chance to share Sophies and my story. I hope she follows through and pushes for national changes," Mrs. Lote explained. "I appealed the councils decision to find the right school for Sophie, and it has grown into a potential nationwide issue."

Some other local authorities, including Wiltshire Council, already consider a family members illness when deciding school placements.

Mrs. Lotes local MP, Labours Claire Hazelgrove, also attended the meeting and described the discussion as encouraging. "The minister was very understanding and clearly recognized this is something we all want to see changed. The challenge is figuring out how to implement it," Ms. Hazelgrove said.

Ian Boulton, co-leader of South Gloucestershire Council, stated that the council plans to review its admissions rules following Christine Lotes case. He noted that any changes will take time due to legal procedures. "We have to follow proper legal steps to avoid challenges from other parents. Otherwise, we would have acted immediately," he said. He also expressed hope for national reform of the policy.

The Department for Education has not yet provided a comment.
