NASA extends management contract for ISS National Lab until 2030

Dec. 4 The Center for Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) will maintain oversight of the International Space Station (ISS) National Laboratory for at least the next five years, the organization confirmed Thursday.

CASIS has been in charge of the ISS National Lab since 2011, following its creation by Congress to foster a strong research and commercial presence in low Earth orbit. The initiative aims to leverage the unique conditions of space for scientific and technological development.

"For almost 14 years, NASA has trusted CASIS to manage this remarkable facility for our country and the benefit of humanity," stated Ramon Lugo, CASIS CEO. "We will continue collaborating to push the boundaries of space research and innovation, supporting life on Earth while nurturing a sustainable space economy."

The National Lab enables experiments that cannot be conducted on Earth. Over the past 14 years, its research portfolio has included studies on cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, aging, in-space manufacturing, and advanced communication technologies. Approximately 60% of the more than 940 scientific projects conducted in the lab have come from private companies, ranging from Fortune 500 corporations to emerging startups.

More than 630 peer-reviewed studies have emerged from the National Lab, providing a foundation for future applications of major significance. CASIS has also facilitated entrepreneurial initiatives, including the Technology in Space Prize and the 2025 Orbital Edge Accelerator program, which awarded $500,000 to six startups through global investment partners.

CASIS collaborates with the U.S. National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health to advance research in physical and life sciences. In 2024, the National Lab partnered with NASAs Biological and Physical Sciences Division to provide $7 million for five projects aimed at progressing cancer research.

Education remains a priority, with CASIS supporting programs for students of all ages that incorporate experiments on the ISS National Lab.

The contract extension comes as the ISS continues to play a key role in international space research and operations. The station is also scheduled to receive multiple cargo missions from Boeings Starliner, following previous propulsion issues during a crewed test flight last year.

Analysis: CASIS Extends Stewardship of ISS National Lab

The recent confirmation that the Center for Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) will continue managing the ISS National Laboratory for at least the next five years underscores the U.S. commitment to leveraging low Earth orbit for research and commercial development. Since its establishment in 2011, CASIS has overseen nearly 950 projects, with more than 60% coming from private enterprises.

This extension ensures continuity for ongoing scientific initiatives, including studies on cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, aging, and in-space manufacturing. With over 630 peer-reviewed publications, the ISS National Lab has become a proven platform for research with potential Earth-based applications.

CASIS' collaboration with federal agencies and support for startup accelerators highlight its dual focus on innovation and commercialization. The continuation of educational programs and partnerships with NASA and other research institutions reinforces the National Lab's role as both a scientific hub and a pipeline for the next generation of space researchers.

Looking ahead, the ISS remains central to international research efforts, with upcoming cargo missions from Boeing’s Starliner signaling ongoing operational activity despite previous propulsion challenges. CASIS’ extended oversight provides stability as the station continues to serve as a unique environment for experimentation and technological advancement.
