Nearly 200 homes evacuated in UK town due to potential explosives threat, 2 men arrested

A significant safety operation took place in Derby, a city in central England, where nearly 200 residences were temporarily cleared and two men were taken into custody on suspicion of possessing explosive materials.

Derbyshire Constabulary announced via social media that the evacuation was a precautionary measure. Officers had executed a warrant at a property on Vulcan Street based on intelligence regarding potentially hazardous substances.

The detained individuals are both men, aged in their 40s and 50s. They remain in police custody, and authorities have not released any additional identifying information.

Local residents expressed shock at the evacuation. Seventeen-year-old Esteban Duda told the BBC that he was taken by surprise and had to quickly get dressed and alert others to leave their homes.

The British Armys Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit conducted a controlled detonation in the area. Authorities had cautioned residents that a loud noise might be heard during the operation.

Police confirmed that the case is not being treated as a terrorism-related investigation and emphasized that there is no danger to the wider community. Nevertheless, residents were advised to be prepared to remain away from their homes for up to 24 hours.

Derbyshire Constabulary asked those who are away or have evacuated to update officers via their Facebook page, as police are visiting homes to confirm the area is clear. Individuals without social media access were instructed to call the 101 non-emergency line.
