Authorities from the Metropolitan Police confirmed that their investigation into Chans long-term abuse is ongoing. Families of the victims expressed shock and distress upon learning that their children were harmed by someone entrusted with their care.
Guilty Pleas in Court
Chan pleaded guilty to 26 charges at Wood Green Crown Court, including five counts of sexual assault by penetration, four counts of sexual assault by touching, and multiple counts of creating and possessing indecent images of children. About 25 family members attended the hearing, while others observed via video link. Chan confirmed his identity and entered guilty pleas while wearing a grey tracksuit.
Timeline of Abuse
Chan worked at a Bright Horizons nursery in north London starting in 2017. Concerns were first raised in May 2024 after an anonymous tip alerted authorities that he had been recording children using nursery-issued iPads. He shared non-sexual still images with colleagues but had created disturbing videos for personal use.
He was arrested on June 11, 2024, on suspicion of child cruelty. Investigators later seized 69 devices from his home, including work iPads, phones, and computers. Forensic analysis revealed thousands of indecent images, some depicting physical sexual assaults. Approximately 25,000 images were recovered, with 2,000 classified as Category A, the most severe level of abuse.
Impact on Families and Nursery
Chan was suspended following his arrest, and the branch of the nursery where the abuse occurred has since closed. Despite a promotion to room leader during his employment, he stepped down voluntarily to continue working as a nursery worker. Authorities highlighted the critical role of staff who reported the abuse, preventing further harm.
Families of the victims are receiving specialized support, and a dedicated helpline has been established for others affected by Chans presence at the nursery. Legal representatives have criticized the nurserys safeguarding failures, demanding accountability and answers.
Authorities Statement
Det. Supt. Lewis Basford described Chans actions as calculated and predatory, exploiting safe environments for children. Investigations are continuing to examine all digital evidence and evaluate the full scope of Chans misconduct.
Sentencing
Chan is scheduled to be sentenced on January 23 at Wood Green Crown Court. Families hope for a sentence reflecting the severity of his crimes and expressed gratitude to law enforcement while acknowledging the investigation is ongoing.
