On This Date: Deadly Smog in London

Fog today is mostly seen as a driving or aviation hazard, but it can also pose lethal risks. On December 5, 1952, London was enveloped by an unusually thick fog that lingered for days. At times, the haze was so heavy that navigating the city at night became extremely difficult, according to the U.K. Met Office.

The unusual event was caused by a high-pressure system settling over the U.K., following a cold November. This created a layer of warmer air above colder ground-level air, which suppressed winds and prevented the air from circulating. As a result, polluted air remained trapped close to the surface.

During the 1950s, many London households relied on coal for heating, and combined with industrial emissions, this transformed normal fog into a hazardous, toxic smog. The incident lasted five days and is estimated to have caused at least 4,000 deaths, with countless more experiencing severe respiratory issues.

The catastrophic impact of this smog led the government to implement Clean Air Acts in 1956 and 1968, aimed at reducing black smoke emissions and improving air quality.
