Sydney, Dec 5 Renowned American television personality Oprah Winfrey has expressed strong support for Australia's upcoming law that will prohibit children under 16 from accessing social media, highlighting its potential to enhance real-life social interactions among youth.
The legislation, set to come into effect on December 10, will prevent minors from using popular platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat. Australian authorities emphasize that the measure is designed to shield young people from harmful online material and potential predators.
Speaking at a Sydney event on Thursday evening, Winfrey praised the initiative, stating that it could significantly improve the lives of a generation of children. She noted her concern over the internets influence on young boys in particular, pointing out that early exposure to harmful content can hinder their ability to develop social skills.
"Many young people struggle with basic communication because of early online habits, especially boys who may become addicted to inappropriate content and miss out on learning how to interact with others in real life," Winfrey said. "Australia is setting a precedent for the world."
The global community is closely observing the effects of this unprecedented restriction, which carries potential fines of up to A$49.5 million ($33 million). Most social media companies affected have confirmed they will adhere to the new rules.
Data from Australias internet regulator indicates that 96% of teenagers under 16over one million of the nations 27 million residentscurrently have social media accounts.

Australia’s decision to restrict social media access for children under 16 represents a bold step in addressing the growing concerns around youth online safety and social development. The legislation, coming into effect on December 10, targets platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat, aiming to protect young users from harmful content and online predators.
Oprah Winfrey’s endorsement of the law highlights the international attention this move is attracting. Her comments underscore the potential impact on social skills, particularly for boys, who may be more vulnerable to addictive or inappropriate online content.
The scale of the law is unprecedented, with potential fines reaching A$49.5 million. Compliance from major social media companies indicates a serious commitment to enforcement. Current data shows that 96% of Australian teenagers under 16 already use social media, suggesting that the law could lead to substantial behavioral changes among youth.
While the law is primarily aimed at safety, its broader implications may influence global discussions on the regulation of digital environments for children. Australia is effectively setting a precedent that could reshape the balance between online freedom and child protection worldwide.
