Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbn is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow this Friday. According to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, the leaders will focus on energy supply issues and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
For days, speculation has swirled regarding Orbns visit, as he is considered to maintain close ties with Moscow despite the war in Ukraine. Within the European Union, Orbn has frequently criticized Kiev and has repeatedly opposed sanctions imposed on Russia. He has also positioned himself as a potential mediator in the conflict.
In July 2024, shortly after Hungary took over the rotating EU presidency, Orbn traveled to the Kremlin, sparking frustration in Brussels. Following a conversation between Putin and former US President Donald Trump in October, Budapest was briefly seen as a possible venue for a meeting between the two leaders. However, Trump later reversed course and enacted substantial sanctions on major Russian oil companies, including Rosneft and Lukoil.
Hungary, alongside Slovakia, remains one of the few EU nations still importing Russian crude oil. Both countries also rely heavily on Russian natural gas, which is expected to be a key topic during Orbns discussions with Putin. Other likely subjects include ongoing initiatives aimed at ending the Ukraine conflict.
Orbn had expressed support for a 28-point, US-backed peace proposal released last week, although the plan faced criticism for favoring Moscow. The proposal has since undergone revisions in discussions between the US, European nations, and Ukraine. Russian officials are expected to meet with US representatives in Moscow next week to review the plan. Orbn has accused the EU of undermining the original Trump-backed initiative, claiming it sought to prolong the war.
Analysis: Viktor Orbán's Upcoming Moscow Visit and Its Implications
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's scheduled meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow this Friday is likely to stir further debate regarding Hungary's stance on Russia and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Orbán, known for his close ties with Moscow, continues to play a delicate balancing act within the European Union, where his position often stands in stark contrast to Brussels' policies.
The core agenda for this meeting, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, will focus on energy supply issues and the conflict in Ukraine. This aligns with Hungary's ongoing reliance on Russian energy, particularly natural gas and crude oil, both of which remain critical for the country's energy security. Orbán's support for Russian oil imports stands in contrast to the EU's broad sanctions targeting Russia. As one of the last EU nations still importing Russian crude, Hungary's continued energy dependence highlights the challenges of EU unity on sanctions and energy policy.
Orbán has been a vocal critic of Ukraine, often opposing Kyiv's positions and calling out EU sanctions. His recent efforts to position himself as a potential mediator in the Ukraine conflict add an additional layer of complexity. While Hungary's support for the US-backed peace proposal seemed a step toward reconciliation, Orbán's claims that the EU undermined the plan in favor of prolonging the war raise concerns about his true intentions in the region. With revised peace proposals being discussed between the US, EU nations, and Ukraine, Orbán's influence in shaping the outcome remains uncertain.
This meeting in Moscow serves as a reminder of the ongoing geopolitical divide within Europe. As Hungary continues to align itself with Russia, the EU's internal cohesion is being tested, particularly in the realm of foreign policy and sanctions. Orbán’s position will likely remain a source of tension in Brussels, especially as European leaders navigate the complexities of the war in Ukraine and the broader issue of energy security.
