Over 1,000 knives collected in police amnesty

In a six-day initiative, law enforcement officials removed over 1,100 knives from the streets of a county. Lancashire Police reported that these items were surrendered in the East Division as part of last months targeted effort to reduce knife-related incidents.

Collection bins were set up in multiple locations, including Blackburn with Darwen, Hyndburn, Burnley, Pendle, the Ribble Valley, and Rossendale, resulting in 1,111 items being handed in. Additionally, authorities conducted 43 test purchase checks to ensure retailers were not selling knives to individuals under 18, with five businesses found in violation.

The campaign also involved searches in public areas and parks to locate weapons. Officers visited 36 schools to educate students about the risks and consequences of carrying knives.

Sgt. Michael Johnson from Lancashires violence reduction network emphasized: "Our teams work year-round to tackle knife crime and make it clear that knives have no place in our communities. If you know someone carrying a knife, you can report it anonymously through Crimestoppers."

A similar operation in June achieved comparable outcomes, showing consistent progress in the countys efforts to curb knife-related incidents.
